New 7mm???

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I was hoping to get some idea of what people hunt with a 7mm. I just won a new 7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Mag at the MDHA banquet last week and was wondering where to put it into service. My preliminary research points me to a good deer gun that is especially good in long range situations. I was wondering if anyone uses 7mm for bear hunting. Just post your most common uses for 7mm.

Thanks.

I use mine for deer hunting and it does a very good job. Also,a very good long range rifle. smile.gif

Would probably work fine for bear, but I use a 300.

Also,Welcome to Fishing Minnesota as I see this is your first post.Great bunch of guys here.

I used to have 7mm rem mag. Of all the moose I shot in my lifetime i only dropped a few in their tracks and one of them was with a 7mm rem mag. I think it will work good for bear. My dad uses a 270 for everything, moose, deer, and bear and nothing gets away. BY the way welcome to forum and congrats on the new gun. Brian

Did you win it at the State Habitat Banquet in Duluth ? If so, my Dad also won a Remington model 7 in the 300 ultra short mag on the Gun Correl drawing. I myself won the Savage from the 4-wheeler raffle. Was your gun a mix up with the boxes also ?

The name pretty much says it all. I've used a 7MM now going on 20 years and it has never wavered once. I get a kick out some of the guys in our camp talikng about how wonderful their 30-06 or their 270 or their 308.'s are. Then later we get to go look for blood trails. I've used it for everything. The only thing that it might be light on is for the big bears, for that I have a 35 Whelen and that is just as enjoyable to shoot. I do hand load and I use Nosler Partition for everything and it't perfect. The bottom line is that if your can shoot well "IN THE FILED" like you can at the range, any of these guns will perform well. We as hunters are the ones missing the mark not the guns. I gotta go, time to go find some chops in the freezer for dinner tonight. grin.gif

So, is the 7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Mag anything like the wssm's?

I've heard a bit about them and what an improvement eh?

I'm not sure about the difference between the remington ultra mag vs. the other 7 mags and if they make a 7 wssm, what have you learned?

All I know is that the bullets sure seem to like the short squat cartridges for accuracy and velocity.

Just another hot wildcat, but this concept is sweeping the range of calibers very favorably.

Thanks everyone for the great input. I hope to use this gun for minnesota black bears, so generally not the biggest of bears. I have no doubt about its lethality, but would like something that will have enough pop to create a nice exit wound to maximize my chance of having a good blood trail. My hopes are that the 7mm will do just that. I have used a 30-06 in the past and don't know if I would want to replace it with the 7mm.

I did win the gun at the state habitat banquet in duluth and it was one with the mixed up boxes. That was sort of disappointing to not be able to take it home. Did your dad hear back from MDHA yet? Congrats on your win also. What did you think of that banquet. I was a little less impressed than in past years. Seems like they scaled it down a bit.

Enough talk about hunting, it is still fishing season!!
