0 Cliff Wagenbach
John,What you want to look for in a deep cycle battery is the amp hours rateing the battery has.The higher the amp hours, the longer your battery will last while in use.In a starting battery the same is true.Cliff
0 marine_man
Cliff is right on... The group size has more to do with the physical size of the battery... if I recall correctly a group 24 battery is a starting battery (size wise anyway) and a group 27 battery is a deep cycle battery (size) marine_man
0 Satchmo
The group 24 are generally starting batteries, although deep cycles will also come in this size, especially the orbital cell batts. The deep cycle batteries will normally come in the group 27 or 31 sizes. These will have a reserve capacity stated on the side. The larger batteries usually have the largest reserve capacity. The group 31 typically have the largest capacity, but be aware that most boats are set up with group 27 battery trays for the trolling motor batteries, so you may have to re-outfit your rig for the larger ones.
