Native Aquarium

bassman186

Question

Does anyone out there have tips on raising MN fish in an Aquarium. I have 2 (a 45 and 55 gallon) aquarium. I have done sunfish and Bass in the past but I'm looking for something different. Any Ideas? Also does anyone have a fish farm of there own where I could By the fish from instead of paying a pet shop???

About 10 years ago I had a Tiger Muskie.

He (or she?) was about 4 " long and was almost transparent when I got it. It would eat feeder guppies. Talk about cool, watching him eat was a treat! He would hide in the plastic plants then WHAM grab one of those little guppies sideways, and with a twitch or two of its head get them head first and down they went.

That must have been an awesome site! Can't wait until I get a larger aquarium (have my eyes on a nice 110 gallon). I'd love to raise my own baitfish in it and/or keep some native gamefish in there. I once raised a few sunnies, one perch, and an albino channel cat in a 25 gallon aquarium.

Most important thing to do when keeping native fish: FREQUENTLY CHANGE THE WATER.

Bassman, it is legal for a child to take small gamefish for aquarium use at home. Bring a kid out with you and catch something around 6". You've got an aquarium fish!

Lost;

Thanks, I know the muskie sounds so cool. That would be one for the tank if I could get ahold of one.

I have had good success in the past and yes frequently changed water is a key.

Right now in the 55 gallon I have a pumpkinseed but he's kinda lonely!

I got it from a pet store. They had northerns, bass, and waleyes. They also had the paperwork for the DNR.

I don't know if stores carry game fish anymore. I haven't looked at pet stores in years.

I had it in a 20 ga wide tank. In 6 months he really thickened up and grew a few inches. Being a poor college student at the time a bigger tank was out of the question.
