Ripped out toenail???

Last night my 11 month old lab ripped off a toenail. I didn't know she did it until I saw some blood on the kitchen floor a couple hours after playing fetch with her in the back yard for a half hour or so. She must have ripped it off while playing. She didn't yelp or whine or anything. You know labs, tough as nails! This morning it was still bleeding and it seemed to be causing some discomfort. I brought her to the vet and they wrapped it and put some ointment on it. They also gave me some Omoxicillin (sp?) for her. Is there anything I should be worried about with it? I can't keep a bandage on it, cause she wants to chew at it. I read in one of my books that a torn toenail can cause major problems but the book didn't discuss what those problems may be, so I just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to help her. Thanks for any suggestions!

If it's completely off and only the core is left just try to clean it daily and then just let it be. It'll likely grow back just fine. I've only experienced this once. I did nothing for it. It grew back good as new.

My vizsla lost her toenail on her 2nd day of life. The breeder fond it barely hanging in the whelping box and cut it off to avoid further discomfort. I was very angry that I didn't notice it when I picked her up and the breeder didn't tell me about it beforehand (I drove to illinois from alex to pick her up). There were only 2 females out of the litter so I was pretty much stuck. The nail never grew back. It's the outside nail on her left foot. As a result we have pad issues every year. The tendon must have also been dammaged because there is less support in that toe, it is kind of floppy and rotates easily compared to to the other toes. She get sore feet and wears part of the side of toe where there is no pad. It's a pain.

My girlfriends Basset Hound lost a nail one night while I was watching her two dogs, my two dogs, and my two kids. I was making dinner when I went to let the dogs in from outside. I was cleaning paws before I let them in and noticed blood all over the garage floor. I cleaned the nail with a towel and it seemed to be done bleeding. I figured she just ripped it off into the quick. Went in the house to continue cooking and noticed blood all over the floor. So... I had food burning, a dog bleeding all over the place, kids freaked out by all the blood and wondering if the dog was going to be ok. I ended up wrapping her food with an old hand towel and duct taping it in place... Then I put an old sock on her leg up to her shoulder (short basset leg) and taping that in place as well. It did the job. Basically the nail was kept clean and was allowed to clot over night. She did get it off, but most of the bleeding stopped by the time she did.
