I've been wondering about this too. The only way to know is to email the local CO. But the law says:

Quote:

Anglers may use only one hook. A treble hook, when not part of an artificial lure, is considered three hooks and is not legal. The exception is three artificial flies may be used when angling for trout, crappie, sunfish, and rock bass.

I think that because there is so much circularity, they don't define an artificial lure, which leaves it up to the courts. I have seen the HT tackle tip up rigs they sell with the beads and spinners, but honestly, do you think that that is an artificial lure? I don't. The fish are interested in the bait, not the artificial lure. On the other side, tip up fishing has always been to catch toothy pike. Without that treble hook, you can miss a lot of fish. So I say fish it, it would get thrown out in courts. Or better yet, ask a CO.

Hiya,

If it has a spinner blade within 2" of any of the hooks, it's a lure. That's all you really need to be legal. I've gone pretty high up the ladder in the DNR to get clarification on this, and that is pretty much the accepted answer. I've been checked using these rigs a number of times, and never been gigged.

This particular rule is something I've been trying to get changed. One of the benifits of buying ink by the barrel is that soap box rants do work on occasion. It really is an archaic law. Whatever its intent was or is, it in effect makes the most fish friendly rig there is - quick strikes - illegal in MN without the addition of a spinner that has no effect whatsoever on the rig's function. Other than the HT rigs, most off the shelf quick strikes are technically not legal in MN, especially those sold for muskies in the fall. Meanwhile, Swedish smelt hooks and single hook sucker rigs, which are flat-out fish killers, are perfectly legal. It's a case of utter statutory idiocy...

Uhh...other than that I don't have any strong feelings on the matter grin.gif

Cheers,

RK

Ok who got RK going? grin.gif

Good points RK. The singe hook issue is ugly, even after much research and debate single hook bait rigs are legal and do kill fish. Some refinement is needed on what is and what is not legal on livebait rigs.

going to put this back out. the only way to not kill fish is a circle hook. the multiple hook rigs can be just as deadly and even more deadly on larger fish. plus they can be alot of work to remove if the fish rolls on you. also when you have a large fish and you have to reach down the hole to turn the head to get them up - well i feel better knowing there is only one hook versus 6.

just my thoughts - i have been very happy with circle hooks sense i started using them there just hard to find in none catfish sizes.

not trying to stir the pot just giving my thoughts on what works well for me

I certainly think circle hooks have their merits. However a treble hook based quick strike rig is generally not a fish killer in my opinion. The key is "quike strike". Letting a fish run until they stop with either a single hook or treble hook is trouble in my opinion. When deploying a treble hook set-up (single or multiple) the key is to set he hook as soon as possible. When I have done this I have had very few fish were I have had a hook-up that is deeper than I want (no blood or gills). This being said circle hooks are made to be driven into the corner of the mouth and I realize that even quickly set trebles can end up in he gills periodically.

If you are conscious of our flags and react quickly I don't think you can go wrong wih either QS rigs or circles. Just remember the "set" is distinctly different in each situation.

Circle hooks work very well on tipups for all species. Mtreno, more and more hook manufacturers are realizing the effectiveness of circle hooks for bait-fishing, and are coming out with new models and more sizes. Eagle Claw makes a beauty of a circle hook down to a size 12. Mustad also makes some smaller models as well. These models are also much more of a "true circle" than the Gamakatsus which are just modified J-hooks. They work better. ~hogsucker

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
