Motor Well Rigging - Any Pics to Show??

TSCTSC

Question

Am thinking of improving my rigging of the outboard at the motor well. Want to clad the wires and cables with flexible black sleeving and perhaps reroute some of the wires. Does anyone have any experience doing this and/or have pictures to share of what they have done? Thanks

I don't have any pictures, but my friend and I put drill to his boat before the ink had dried on the purchase contract. He bought a 2001 (or 2002, don't remember) Lund Explorer. He didn't like how Lund decided to run the steering cables and throttle on top of the rod box, so we removed all cables from the motor, drilled some holes and ran the cables in the top back corner of the rod box. We made sure to get good quality grommets so no cable would be damaged if we left a messy cut in the aluminum. It worked out great and lo and behold, Lund made similar changes the next model year.

This probably did affect the warranty, so you know.

Good luck with your modifications!

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures... but can you refresh my memory with what you have for a boat?

If I recall, you have a 150 suzuki 2 stroke... and a lund boat, but I don't remember what model...

I've got some ideas, but it'll be easier to explain if I know the specifics...

One other thing... do all of your electrical cables (electrical harness, battery cables) go into your motor in one location?

I have a 2001 Lund Mr Pike 16 with a Yamaha 90 HP 2 stroke.

My motor has the steering cable to it. In addition, the trim and tilt wires and such run from my console together with the wires from the battery that come straight out from a hole in the back. The wires all go into the same place in the motor.

Wow... I guess I was way off on your setup... sorry!

Anyway, what I did when I used to rig boats was to run the throttle cables, speedometer tube and the steering cable the same way lund does - out the boot at the rear of the boat. You don't have a lot of options on these three things given the size of the cables and the fact that they don't bend real easily, and don't work very well bent. You can run these in the nylon looming if you want, but I personally don't think it looks that bad as all four of those things are typically black and if you do a good job tie wrapping them and laying out the routing to eliminate kinks, twists, etc it looks pretty good.

What I've done is to re-route the electrical harness and battery cables to all run out of the rubber boot / grommet, etc that is near the splashwell and run them directly from there to the rubber grommet on the motor. I'd run those in the braided nylon loom stuff...

You probably have a corrugated tube if you reach into the right hand side compartment that runs down toward the bilge area on the boat.... run your electrical harness through that and then up to the grommet... if there is an unsealed grommet in the splashwell replace it with a rubber boot with a zip tie that you can close around the looming / cables.

The biggest thing is to take your time and lay out all your cables so they don't twist, wrap etc and it will look good... make sure you leave enough slack in all of your routing's for your motor to turn side to side, when tilted all the way down and all the way up.

One thing that I used to do with the throttle cables, if they were long enough, was to mount the motor in the second hole from the top (this was more for performance than looks) and route the throttle cables under the motor mounting bracket and use a tie wrap with a hole in just to the left hand side of the motor to keep the throttle cables there, then make a big loop to the motor.

Sorry I don't have any pictures... if you have any questions or a better description let me know...
