LX3/LX5 Questions????

Is there that much of a difference to get the LX-5 for $475.00?

I'm planning on getting the LX-3 at Dick's Sporting Goods that is on Sale, but am wondering if I should just add the extra cash for the LX-5.

Is it worth the extra $200 or so dollars?

What do you fish for predominately and what kind of situations are you looking at for fishing? The LX-3 is a great little unit and has a 20 deg. widebeam transducer standard. The LX-5 comes double barrelled with 8/20 deg. transducer which gives you the option of the big picture 20 deg. (wider view and less bottom) or a tight picture 8 deg.(narrower view and more bottom). The 8 deg. transducer allows you to get in to very tight places with out the dead zone issues you have from a large 20 deg. diameter transducer. For instance if you fish steep break walleyes where the bottom depths are uneven the 8 deg. excells. If your like most fisherman and pretty much fish flats, the LX-3 will be fine. I have two LX-3's and a LX-5 and having the extra added weaponry on the LX-5 is awesome and well worth the price. But I also have an upgraded LX-3 and added TC True Color to that over Christmas and that's an solid investment too. I would say if money is an issue you will be fine with the 3 but if you want the king the LX-5 is truly awesome and it's given me the clearest and sharpest picture of any flasher out there with the added versatility with the dual beam. You fish this unit next to the FL-18 and you will see instantly why MarCum is the new king in 3 color flasher performance. This unit is a masterpiece! If you like weeds the LX-5 is awesome in heavy weed cover too. Awesome machine and built tough for combat fishing!

CNY Tim hit the nail on the head, I couldn't of said it better myself. I myself am on my second LX3 and love them, used to be a Vex before I saw a Marcum. Sometimes fishing on deep breaks I wish I had the LX5, not worrying about dead zone would be nice. Tim, how do you like the super fine line? How much of a difference is there?

The superfine line really condenses the entire water column nicely on the right side of the powerhead, it's amazing how much detail that SFL function gives you. Fishing 22' of water the other day I noticed small yellow marks around 4' down so I ripped my jig up to see what the hoohaw was and caught a 4" shiner, LOL. This happened a couple of times while I was out there and when that keeper walleye came on the screen at 31' while fishing 38' it was captured quite crisply in SFL. This unit has been nothing short of spectacular each time I have turn on that power knob. I love it!

SFL is a handy feature.

For me, it was nice wherever I was fishing in deep water with big schools of roaming fish. Especially with crappies, if there are alot of fish down there, you can lose your jig in the school and not really know where you're at in relation to the biters.

Zoom takes care of this too, but when they're suspended over a distance greater than 10 feet vertically, it's all right in front of you on the main dial!

I think of it as a zoom feature that allows me to still see the entire water column, on the full extent of my Marcum's dial.
