No wonder I broke off...

Dang! Had my hard drive not smoked on me this fall...I would have a pic of a friend of mine.

They were fishing from rip rap on shore when his 3 or 4 oz sinker became hung up in the rocks. With a little work he managed to free it, but the mono acted like a rubber band... it hit him just below and to the side of his eye.

This guy looked like he was in a bar fight! Black, Blue and Red all at the same time. It was really surprising how big a bruise from a one inch sinker can make.

I'm not good with accuracy...or distance (no wife jokes please! crazy.gif)

However, I was channel cat fishing and wanted to fish the next snag down. Figured I would show off for the other two in the boat. Gave 'er a quick snap much like a baseball pitcher's wind up. PERFECT CAST! Right smack dab in front of the snag....and of course I was patting myself on the back pretty good...until one of my friends pointed out that my line was laying over a tree branch about 30 feet in the air! blush.gif

I don't brag about my casting abilities anymore.

RW & Hanson.. you guys spoiled the surprise!

What would be better than a bullhead landing in the boat would be the face of the occupants when the bullhead was on the way.. shocked.gifshocked.gifshocked.gif

note: I had to use the *shocked* smiley because there was no *terror* smiley.

Bullhead.... no wonder you guys are so twisted... your using the Iowa state fish for bait!!!!

That is no joke about Mono acting like a rubberband on a snag, I think dietz took a 4/0 worm hook to the forearm once because of it, and I know Ive had sinkers weights and jigs hit very undesirable parts of my body before, thats why I like braids you dont seem to have that problem with them!

Ohh and I would never throw something at another fisherman on purpose.... jetskiers and tuna boats on the other hand.... grin.gif

In all honesty.. many of us catfisherman would probably put an Iowan' on the hook if that's what it took to get a bite!

Picking on the Iowegians now are we...

Guess I better keep quiet on where I was born around here.

I might end up on the wrong end of a fishing pole!

What I was wondering was... is the casting contest distance or acuracy?

I need to know so I know where my bets will be placed!

Accuracy at a distance.. and overall distance.

I have rods longer than most of these bass guys cast.. so some of that close up stuff may not be fair wink.gif That and my 6500's dont come with a flipping switch.

I seem a little on the concieted side lately? oh well, I can live with that.

You need to come fishing with me early this spring Dennis.. I guarantee you will add a rod or 2 to your arscenal that will cover some distance for the spring channel cats and early flatheads.

I have a feeling Dark 30 will have a rod in hand that can toss a bait a bit further this spring after last year... unless he wants to wait until I get to the spots to see fish caught.

All in fun Kevin!

Is this casting for distance contest only for wussy boys who fish for bass and cats or do you allow sturgeon fishermen in too?? Between my sons and I we can come up with a half dozen rods in the ten to twelve foot length. Just pick the line weight and casting weight and we could have some fun with this. We could do something they call a wager. Where the loser buys a quart of pickled herring for the winner???? grin.gifgrin.gif

Unless fish want to eat that pickled herring.. yuck!

I can visualize it now.. 8 FM'ers showing up with brand new 15' surf rods spooled with 4 lb test casting across the Mississippi river to try to win a jar of pickled minnows? grin.gif

In the mean time Dennis and Kevin would be sitting off to the side with bait in the water as we acted foolish throwing baits a million miles just to see who could... I'm sure they would be amazed watching the distance of some of the cast.. but only between reeling fish in.

Dennis is now saying.. why is he trying to get me stuck in the middle of this? If I need to get out that far, I will launch the RP.

Was I too far off with that comment Dennis?

While I may feel more comfrtable in a boat, I'd feel much safer on shore when dozens of 6oz sinkers go flying through the air! grin.gif

I was just looking through some online catalogs for one of those "breakaway" rods they use down south so I can compete too!

The cat guys will clean up on those silly little bass guys, and even the musky dudes on distance. But I fear those bass guys might kick some "bass" on acuracy.

Good thing I'm a graduate of cat 101 with a minor in multi-species.

I think we really ought to do this!

Lets get a date for the first anual casting contest.

We could have a couple categories or classes.

It would be a great time!

Dennis- I was kind of thinking the same thing myself. Funny how these ideas come about. I started this thread to pick on the bass guys. grin.gif Now its GAME ON!

I'm definitely not one to thump my chest about casting distance. I'm usually super pumped to see my bait touch down without the bullhead flying off, even at short distances. So you guys don't need to be concerned about myself.

1st Annual Casting Contest

When?

Where?

Why?

We should probably have the 7000 Series Garcia division, 6500 Series Garcia division, and then the division for the bass guys. grin.gif

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM... Hanson I remember a time (not long ago) when you had a Bass on your AVATAR!!!! I have a 55 series C4 does that count? never thrown anything over 7/8 of ounce with it blush.gif (I know that may shock some of you cat guys) But I can wing that across the Dam area at Orono (in Elk River) Pretty easily (the entire distance of the bridge) So I might go get a real long rod and see if I can get in on this, on second thought we should Have a rule that you have to use the same exact setup throughout the contest so when it comes to Accuracy us Bass Guys will be at a distinct advantage grin.gif

Man whats wrong with me.... Ive been posting more in the Ugly Fish forum then in the real fish forum lately grin.gif

Dems fighting wurds! mad.gif

Thats it I will be there with the 9'7" grenade launcher. You frog squashers think you chuck heavy stuff try chucking a water logged Wobble bait in a five foot chop. (For the cat guys~ Chop or Wave- when the water you fish is more than 100 feet across and a wind forces the water into many big ripples. Similar to the ripple when a flattened frog contacts the water surface only 100x bigger creating challenging conditions for casting heavy baits into open pockets in the weeds in search of real fish. ((real fish- fish with teeth)) shocked.gifgrin.gif )

shocked.gifOH ITS ON LIKE DONKEY KONG! shocked.gif

I think this would only be somewhat fair if there were line class categories, and maybe a max length on the rods for the most part. There could be some "anything goes" category with no rod length limit. For shorter all around accuracy casting, I dont see where there should have to be any limitations.

There should be some way to figure it out make it somewhat fair, and not overcomplicate it.

I think the line class thing would be the most fair mediator out there.

Where's Manny or Ralph(noober) when you need them? We need someone out there in a boat tossing buoys to mark the spot, and to double for a long distance target? (j/k)

this couldnt be anything more than a dead weight or lure tossing contest.. and some fishing to go along after.

I have a real good idea where something like this could take place this spring, and it would open up a great fishing opportunity to those who want to hang around and catch some cats, or crappies.

OHHHH great now Dave announces an open class to get me in trouble with my wife, the shorter combos that I buy blend right in with all my other rods so she never really notices when theres a new one laying around, now where am I gonna hide a 6500 abu and a 14 foot surf rod?......

And Hanson you just opened yourself way up for posting that pic!! I cant wait to see the photo shops of this one!!!! Have at her Brian I cant wait!!

1st Annual Casting Contest

When?

Where?

Why?

When...My thoughts.. late March. Good time for fishing the open water(river), and the lakes usually arent ready to go. Many people should have open time on their schedules.

Where.. I know a good area in minneapolis with a huge open shoreline and good fishing opportunities at that time, ample parking(free).. plenty of room for the BBQ.

Why? Because we can, and do we really have anything better to do besides look for an excuse to go fishing in what most consider to be the off season?

I know many of you know where I am thinking for location. If anyone has any objections to the location, feel free to contact me by email and let me know. There is more than one place out there something like this could happen.

Hmmm... A 1000 foot long barge doesn't push a wake?

Ya you musky and bass guys might have a little more experience on casting. Heck you cast all day long.

But thats only because your as indecisive as an old lady trying to decide on what shade of blue hair color to buy.

If you knew your fish and where to catch them, like a good catman knows his cats, you wouldn't have to do all that casting. One cast is all you need.

grin.gif

The casting contest might work better on land or the ice.

Kind of hard to measure the exact spot you hit on the water.

Hey Brian- you wanted me to start picking on the golfers too, right?

We could have the event at a driving range perhaps. Not sure if we could talk a driving range into it but at least it would be an open field with distances measured off already. Would probably be the best use of a driving range in a long time. grin.gif

If we don't need accuracy to the nearest yard, Dave's spot is a good one if there aren't too many people coming. After about 15-20 cars, we may run out of room.

Oh, I'll be there, but only as an ON SHORE spectator tongue.gif

I was wondering about holding the event on open water and how complicated it might be to judge distance. I came up with a couple ideas. An elected or volunteer panel of fair and impartial judges (good luck finding unbiased judges with this crowd blush.gif) will eyeball the distance casted. To confirm which cast was indeed the farthest, we can employ the use of a clip on line counter, clipped on backwards to measure the distance casted. For accuracy, we could maybe use hula hoops or something like that.

I like the idea of on the open water in late March, especially if it's where That Guy suggested. Like he said, cats and crappies for those who'd want to stick around and fish laugh.gif

I vote for Hanson's idea on the driving range. I haven't had my golfing shorts on for years.....

If it were to be on the water, I can see a problem with distance casts...unless there's a boat out there.

Manny, it might not be safe on shore, if I'm casting. blush.gif

Yeah, I could see the problem on the water too. That would get complicated. The line counter thing I dont think would work either..THere is a lot of extra line out at the end of a cast(arch), and those using light rigs would be using light weight where it would cause difficulties.

The casting would have to happen on land. This couldnt happen anywhere there are windows down range for at least 300 yards. There is no way anyone will cast that far, but a line snapping and sending a 3-5 oz weight flying off an 8'-10" rod mid-cast is going a LONG, long ways.

I think I know a spot near where I was thinking in the beginning that has some open area. I will have to see if the parking is free. I know its ample.
