16 ft lund 18 or 25 hp

Got A Byte?

Question

I have a 16 ft lund boat. The plain jane kind with only seats. my old motor has died and I am looking at a new one.

I am looking at either a nissan 4 stroke 18 or a nissan 25 4 stroke. I am pretty much sold on the brand because of the price. But thier is a $600 dollar difference between the two.

I would like to keep my costs as low as possible however I want to go at a reasonable pace.

I am looking for any advice on what motore to buy 18 or 25.

Depends on what kind of fishing you will be doing and the amount of gear you will be stowing on your outings.

4 strokes are heaveir then 2 strokes, ,so if your like me and doing a lot of river fishing, I would go with the 18 and put the price difference into a nice bow mount trolling motor.

The 18 will be slower, probably 3-5 mph slower than the 25, take longer to get you on plane etc.... but if your not going to be loading the boat down with weight the 18 will work fine.

I have a 20 horse merc on my "plane jane" boat that I installed a treated plywood floor and carpeting and it still goes 28 mph. with that extra weight.

To me, a descent trolling motor is more important than a bigger motor unless I need to get somewhere faster than someone else and that 6 bill difference will get you an awfully good trolling motor.

I would shop around for a better price on the 25. You'll never be sorry in my opinion for going with the bigger option. I had a 30 Johnson 2 stroke on a 16 Lund and many times was glad I did. The motor doesn't have to work as hard and you don't have to operate at full throttle, but it is still there if you want it.
