Just moved here a couple months ago coming off a one year stint in Korea. I was in Utah before Korea and got really heavy into fishing. After getting the house settled I am more than ready to head out with my 7 year old and start drilling through some ice. Anybody have any idea's on a good place to start?

I am at Ellsworth AFB so mainly looking at the west side of the state.

Thanks for any help and I am looking forward to swappin some stories with some of ya'll!!!!

Tight Lines!

Teroy,

Welcome of FishingMinnesota.com.

Deerfield Lake might be a good place to start in your area. It's plum full of trout that are ususally willing to bite. You might try calling or asking your local bait shop for more fishing opportunities.

Sorry I cannot of anymore help that that. Somebody else might chime in with some better advice.

Once again, Welcome to FishingMinnesota

Thx for the reply and the welcome Tyler.

I will take your advice and hit Deer Field this saturday. We went driving today and I was as coy as possible trying to drive by as many lakes as possible without making it obvious to the wife LOL.

I see that some of the waters here have that elusive Tiger Muskie. I was lucky enough to hook a couple of those in Utah. biggest was 46" long and about 38 Lbs.

Tight lines and hope to see some more activity here!!!!!!!

Sounds good.. Keep us posted on the fishing results in the Black Hills area. I'm interested to see if Deer Field is still as good as it use to be.

I've never landed a Tiger, but I've been broken off a few times in bodies of water that hold that elusive critter. I've seen 2 caught, but they were smaller (3lbs & 6lbs).

Teroy, welcome. I don't fish the hills in the winter at all but Sheridan and Deerfield are your best bet. All the lower elevation lakes, like Orman, Newell Lake, and Angustora took a hit during this warm spell. You probably know about "The Rooster" bait shop in the gap in Rapid City, but if you don't, stop in there. These people are the nicest and give out fishing reports with a smile. I live 60 miles east of Sturgis and fish mainly stock dams, so this warm spell has kicked my you know what. When we get some colder temps and if you're interested, leave me a note here and I'll take you panfishing on the prarie so to speak. I own a few stock dams with perch, crappie, and bass. No state records but still alot of fun to catch while having a beer with freinds. Good luck.

Hey Waterbeater and Teroy-

It's nice to have a few West River guys to keep us updated on what's going on over there. My old college roomate is a teacher at Newell and he said it's pretty nice out there! His last name ends with "fish" grin.gif

If you are ever in the area, make sure to let me know and I will take you out on the on the water!

Thanks for keeping us posted!

Rost, good to here from another SD boy. Things are not looking good for ice fishing. The ice is hard to get out on and when you do it's pretty honeycombed. I was out Sat. and was real uncomfortable about the safety part so I'm more than likely done until colder weather. Softball or golf would be more in order at this rate. I know a lot of people from Newell. Just went to a basketball game 2 weeks ago there. Can't say as I know your freind but probably will run into him on the Newell golf course sometime. How's your fishing going back on that side of the state? Keep us informed.

Teroy, First of all, thank you for your time out of your life to serve and protect our country. It has been a few years since I have been back to drill a few holes in the hills. My favorite and where I have had the most success is Deerfield,Sheridan is second, and Stockade in Custer is third. Remember, "cook your Splake well done."

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
