Berkley Powerbait Maggots

Just read an article on using plastics through the ice and I think I am sold. I have been using the Berkley Powerbait Maggots and have been doing very well on crappie, perch, and even walleye. A glow jig with a couple of these on it has been the ticket for me. They are more durable so I suspect the cost is the same or less too. Here is a 24" eye I caught on Bowstring Lake Monday evening.

sockeye,

The power bait and maggots are a great choice, especially for light biters. Before powerbait came out Most of the time I would fish Euro larva, or colored maggots, three on a hook, key to the live maggots is to put fresh bait on after a couple of fish for scent reason's, I have found the maggots will catch as many crappies as the minnows and more.

Plastics work great for winter crappies, The small tube jigs I would have with me, the crappies love them, I know I was taught a lesson on LOW last year, I forgot to bring them mad.gif

Until last night, I've always done better with live bait as opposed to the powerbait/gulp maggots/waxies. Last night I had 2 rods rigged identically with a #10 glow shrimpo on each with glow white heads (tails were different colors). My buddy used one and I used one and we each had an ice buster bobber on that was cut almost flush with the top of the water (near 0 boyancy). He had a gulp maggot on and I was using a live wax worm.

I would say we had about exactly the same # of bites (bobber downs) so you could call that a tie. The gulp product stayed on much longer that the live waxie. I had more hookups on fish, but I think he was a little slower to grab for his rod.

I switched to gulp for a few fish, but then switched back to live bait.

A few years ago, I put a gulp maggot on for my girlfriend and it would last for about 10 fish where my live waxie lasted about 2 fish.

I'll continue to favor the live bait option, but I do carry both powerbait and gulp.

For me it was about building confidence in the bait. Once I am convinced that a bait is effective and will catch fish for me, I can fish it with the kind of enthusiasm it usually takes to catch fish. I'm gonna be hitting Bowstring again in the morning and hopefully boosting my confidence a little more.

Northlander,

what do you think is the reason why they make you chuck any live bait when entering Canada? Every year we go up and we have to have our crawlers put in this special bedding. Otherwise you can't take it through! What's the difference what you gottem in?

It's amazing some of the stuff they do and don't allow up there.
