Wall Mount Heater?

CatManLee

Question

I am looking to buy a heater for my 6x14 sleeper house. I am leaning towards the wall mount type heaters. I was just wondering what everyone thought about these? How about other types? What should I look at and Where are some good places to check out?

I know something around 20,000 BTU's would be fine. It also has to operate without electricity, as I have no generator.

And it has to be reasonably priced, I have $150-$200 Dollars to spend on this thing.

So, whats out there?

Thanks.

Couple thing to consider. I suggest mounting it away from being directly over any fishing hole so it doesnt melt your fishing line. Mount it near the door if you can so when it opens the cold air pushes close to the hot air off the heater for better recovery. You can add a 12 volt computer fan from Northern tool for about $5 to move air and will run off a deep cycle battery for weeks. Orbis and Empire are the 2 brands. Orbis can be found at Fleet Farms and they run sales on them once and awhile. Empire is handled by lots of places than sell propane related items. But the both will run you more than your looking to spend. Keep in mind the these are both direct vent heaters and not blue flame. I suggest direct vent for 2 reasons. Propane has moisture in it when it burns, need to vent that outside and not in. The other is CO2. I you plan on sleeping in it this is much safer. Good luck. I just bought a 15,000 Empire used with regulator and thermostat for $100.00 What your local free ads shoppers.

Catman-

I strongly recommend a direct vent Empire furnace. I have the 15,000btu in my 7x12. There are definitely many benefits with a direct vent and are well worth the extra money.

Moisture problems and CO problems as "End of the Line" mentioned are at the top of the list.

My windows in my shack never, ever frost up because of moisture. Yes, they are insulated as well but I know my furnace is not pumping extra moisture into the shack.

I also sleep better knowing that the furnace is direct vent!

Thermostat control is definitely nice!

I realize that a direct vent heater would be the best way to go, but there is absolutely no way I can afford one! They are way out of my price range.

Next year I could possibly buy one, but not this year.

As for looking at local classifieds, believe me, I have been looking, but still no luck.

How about buying a Big Buddy heater and putting a Carbon Monoxide detector in the house? I would also leave a sliding window open a little to let some fresh air in.

I know this isn't the "Safest" way to spend the night, but really if all these steps were taken, it should be pretty darn safe you would think?

Thanks for the input anyways guys. I know you are just saying what is the best and safest possible heating source.

Catman-

I can definitely understand where you're coming from.

I don't like this solution but a wall mounted "blue flame" type heater is definitely in your price range. Menards used to sell a model like this, I'm sure they still do and it was in the $140 range or so. I think the heat output will be much better than a Big Buddy Heater.

Get a CO detector, crack the windows for a little ventilation, and I'm sure you'll be alright. Lots of FMers in the past have reported good things about those type of heaters.

As long as you know and understand the differences between vented & non-vented furnaces and are aware of precautions you should take when using a non-vented furnace, you are a step ahead of the game.

catmanlee,

I was up at Milaca Unclaimed Freight last week and they had several heaters, I believe they were the Atwood 16k btu's.

If memory servs me...I believe I seen like $165.00 price on the one that I looked at. If your not far from there it maybe worth a trip, or you may want to try calling them.

That would be a direct vent and I think they have a built in fan as well.

Good luck.

Just google....Milaca Unclaimed Freight
