Jury-rigging mantles for gas lights?

Marmot

Question

Has anyone had success using a regular lantern mantle on a gas light?

A single mantle for a gas light runs about 5 to 6 bones.

I am hoping someone has a method of jury-rigging a regular lantern mantle to the ceramic piece that holds the mantle to the gas light.

I have used the coleman mantles on my gas lights before, but they do not work nearly as well as the ones designed for the gas lights. The coleman mantles work in a pinch, but I would recommend spending the extra coin on the right ones.

We have had gas lights at my cabin for as long as I can remember and we have only used the coleman style. It seems they fit like they should. Maybe we are missing something, but they work fine for us.

Trial and error is the approach I think I would take. See if you like them.

you can replace your type of mantel atachment with a tie on type nipple instead of the travel type that you have the pieces will run you about 6 bucks and then the mantels are about half of the ones you have. you may have to go to the paulin web site for the refit but i have seen them in some stores. the white gas mantels are thinner snd are not as brite as the gas mantels.

Thanks for clarifying that nytelyter. The mantles I use are the larger tie-on mantles designed for the gas lamps and should run a couple bucks a piece. They are similar to the white gas mantles, but burn brighter and are more durable.

Are you referring to part Burner Nose L12-11A Tie-On Mantle?

I have been buying the Pre-Formed Mantles L13-2.

Last night I took a regular lantern mantle and feed a couple of twisters through the top of it. I am going to try to "wire" the mantle to the gas light. I am not sure if it will work though. I will find out this weekend.

well aj at a ripe ole age of 45 my knowledge is far greater than my years. but i have to give it to marmot for the great find on the info and yes to answer the question the conversion is the tie on one. but my knowledge is based on expierence as i had tie ons went to pre formed and nnow am back to tie ons. also if you look while at mills FF they usually have the gas lamp mantels in six ?? packs great buy but you have to always hunt for them IF they have them.
