Tourney Talk (or lack of)...

Recommended Posts

I am very suprised how inactive this forum is! With all of the anglers posting each day, you'd think we would have at least a few tourney guys around. Are there any others besides myself and the few others that post here that fish tournaments? If so, what circuit or individual tourneys do you fish and why do you like fishing them?

I enjoy fishing tourneys for the challenge and the opportunity to learn more about certain techniques and different bodies of water.

This year I plan on fishing the SD GNWC plus the Dakota Sportsman..

I agree, if you look at past threads, it is spotty at best. I would have guessed guys would be talking about there weeknight leagues, and also T's they fished on the weekends, both bass and walleye. Not sure why it doesn't get more action. I know a lot of guys that post here fish T's Plus with all the Ice fishing T's that seem to be getting started, I would guess that would be getting some time here also. Wait and see, anybody here fish any winter T's for panfish? If so what did you think? Fun or didn't like it. I would think they would start to take off. Alsao do you have to get a permit for them like you do a open water tournament? If not, why not?

I FISH ONLY A COUPLE A YEAR RIGHT NOW ON MILLE LACS AND HOPE TO ADD A FEW MORE THIS YEAR. I USALLY ALWAYS FISH THE RED DOOR. EVERY YEAR MY PARTNER AND I GO AND PREFISH FOR THE WACKER BUT HAVEN'T ENTERED IT AS OF YET. THIS YEAR WILL BE IN HUNTER'S POINT, RED DOOR & HOPEFULLY A FEW ONE DAYS ALSO. AS FAR AS WHY I FISH THEM THE CHALLANGE, AND TOO SEE IF I AM GETTING ANY BETTER. THERE IS ALSO SOMETHING ABOUT THE FIRST MORNING - 100 BOATS SITTING OUT IN A BIG PILE, MOTORS RUNNING, STEAM ON THE WATER THE SMELL OF THE BOAT EXHAUST AND THE ADRENALINE RUSH WHEN YOUR NUMBER IS CALLED AND YOU SLAM THE 200 TO THE BOARDS!

This year will be my third year of Tourney fishing with the MMTS (Minnesota Multi-Species Tournament Series) We run mostly around the Duluth are or within 60 miles of it anyways. We are growing every year and will have nearly 45 anglers participating next year. I originally joined it to make sure I got out fishing once a week in the summer but now am pretty much infatuated with it and look forward to it every Tuesday (Monday Night League).

Next year in addition to the League I plan to run in a few local Tournaments:

Jaws Derby -Lake Superior trout/salmon/walleye. I took 2nd out of 250 boats last year for the Walleye/Northern division.

Grand Slam Walleye Tourney Located on the St.Louis River-First large payout tourney for myself, missed it last year due to work.

WSPA Western Lake Superior Pro Am, first year running and would be the first Large Pro-am to my knowledge using Lake Superior. This will be the first year for this tournament, I will be helping raise funds for this and we are currently looking for sponsors.

Overall I find myself short on time to do everything I would like to do, but such is life!

I fish the Minnesota Walleye Trail.

I agree with the lack of tournament talk on this HSOforum be it in January or in the middle of summer. I have found a couple of other websites I go to for tournament talk. I'm not bashing FM as I post frequently and enjoy this site. I just have found some other sites that have good tournament talk.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
