I have used the Menards out door carpet in a few boats that I refurbished. In my opinion its just as good as the marine grade you would pay twice for.
Good old Krylon enamel is a decent paint as well.I bought it by the gallon and used a sprayer on a couple old boats.Matter of fact the carpet and paint lasted longer than one of the boats!
Be sure to etch aluminum before painting it.Use a muriatic acid wash before painting.I think its either 1 to 2 h2o or 1 to 3?? Carefull with the stuff though, don't get it on your hands and wear a respirator. It will get you if you let it.

hey Schwanger - haul that thing up here this weekend and I'll have it ready for you when you come back in June. Then you can sell it and we can get you into a "real" fishing rig. You'll need one in a couple years with all that free time!

I just re-did the floor in my 1974 14ft Starcraft and re-painted her too. Like Dennis mentioned, I too would advise on using the otdoor carpet from a menards or home depot. If they have it on sale at menards, go there.

I also used the outdoor carpet glue that home depot had for $12. This stuff becomes waterproof and will seal the top of the plywood when it is fully cured as well. They say 5 days before it should be introduced to water, but I could still smell it curing for 7 days.

for paint, I used aluminum primer in a spray can (took 7 cans to do two coats on my 14 foot boat). Then I followed up with rustoleum professional Dark Grey ( it comes in a silver can and are a bit bigger). 5 cans for two coats. Looks pretty good. Could have hit a couple spots a little better, but this is my river boat and the catfish won't be complaining. The spray cans were only at menards. I could only find the quart and gallons at Home Depot and since I didn't have access and didn't want to buy a spray gun set up, I stuck with the spray cans.

I see you live out in Waconia. I live out in Saint Louis Park right off of 169 and 7 if you wanted to take a look at what the floor or paint job looks like on my 14 footer or wanted to get ideas on what floor layout you will be doing. I would post a pic of before and after as well, but this winter I forgot that my digital camera was at the bottom of the bucket and burried it with crappies and snow smile.gif

Thanks Korn_fish for the helpful information. You didn't mention that you etch your boat before painting, did you? Thanks for the offer, as I move forward I might take you up on the offer. My Son lives behind Taco Bell in that section of Hopkins and St. Louis Park just off of hwy. 7 so I can drag him along. Thanks again.

With the aluminum boat you can do as Dennis says and etch it, or you can take a sander with 100 grit and scuff up the boat, use an aluminum primer, non sanding if you can find it, if you cant then sand the primer with 180 to 220 grit sandpaper, then just paint, if you use two caots, sand between coats. You will get a better adheasion if you sand between caots. Most paints out there react with aluminum, so you will need some type of barrier coat between the boat and the paint.

I didn't etch it because it was primer on paint. I roughed up the paint with sandpaper as Danny Berg mentioned. most of the alluminum primer etches on their own. I would still suggest running sandpaper over the boat, be it previously painted or bare alluminum. The primer I used indicated that it worked fine with painted surfaces.

I am over by Taco bell all the time at Lindees for their 2 for 1's smile.gif I actually live behind Target right across the street.

Shwangman,
I don't wanna be a salesman, but I will be. Use some type of etching solution as mentioned before. The reason you'll need this is because you then have a surface with a good profile, and all the minerals form the years of sitting in the water will be removed. No matter what your painting, get a good quality primer (something with a HIGH amount of zinc). The top coat should also be a good quality enamel- preferably a solevent based paint, not an oil, as it will chalk and fade. Rustoleum wouldn't be my first choice, in fact, it'd be my last. Go to a reputible industrial paint dealer Diamond Vogel is one of the best around, or even a good auto parts store eill have good paints like a Martin Senour, Enzo Nobel, etc.
If you don't do these types of things your paint will come peeling off that boat in no time.
Hope your project goes well.

No problem Schwang - my advice to you is always free because you're the only sucker I know that always takes it - no questions asked. j/k Good luck with the project, maybe see it in June?

Thanks Bigclean, I can use all the helpful hints that you all want to give me. I forgot to mention that the paint job I'm doing is to the inside for now, the outside will have to wait but I assume the etching process would be the same. I told the Menards people what I was doing and hopefully it will turn out. Thanks again to all of you that offered up comments on my project, even you Cabinboy!

Thanks Cabinboy, I knew you would have some kind of come back!!! Hopefully we can hook up a couple times, maybe even go out and wet a line in the water or in the bar.
