mnhunter2
The instructions say I must have a min. of 4 1/2 of wall depth for the empire heater to work but the wall is only 1 3/4 deep so do I need to build the wall out to 4 1/2 or will the heater work with a standard 2x2 wall. 0 hanson
mnhunter2-There are many shacks out there that have their Empire furnaces mounted that way. In fact, I was in one this weekend that had 2" thick walls and the furnace worked perfectly fine.In my shack, I purchased the extension piece that goes on the outside of the house. It adds another 3-4" to the length of the intake & exhaust flues. Its a little metal box that screws to the shack. You then screw the exhaust vent to the extension box. Mine works fine as well. The other option you have is to build your heater out from the wall on the inside as well to make the flue length correct. If anyone knows why Empire requires these flue lengths, I'd be interested as well. I'm not sure if it has something to do with how the furnace drafts the air in & out or if it helps keep the wind from blowing out the pilot. 0 Augusta
Empire recommends the extension so the pilot light does not go out. I have the extension on mine and have pulled the fish house down the road at 55 mph and the pilot light has stayed lite. Just my 2 cents
