Portable used as a Permanent

I'd like to set up my portable and use it like a permanent, it's a Clam 6800 and I'd like to leave it out for a few weeks in the same spot.

What do I need to do to keep it in place?

Perhaps more importantly, how do I keep it from freezing into the ice?

I was thinking about a "sacrificial" wooden base that would go underneath it.

use caution as they are portable and worth a decent amount of $$.

I know a few people who learned the hard way about leaving the portable unattended overnight.

Be especially careful in the metro area as these lakes seem to get a bit more traffic therefore more breakins/thefts.

Don't even bother. I have a homemade, "portable" that I have left on the Ice several times and have had nothing but trouble. I left on one lake and drilled a hole in the Ice and tied a rope to it which I froze into the ice (shallow enough to remove later) Some one cut the rope and pushed it to other side of lake (no it didn't blow there).

Then I decided to leave it on another lake and used a ratchet with 6" long lag bolts screwed into the ice, surely nobody would be carrying the correct size socket and go through the trouble of unscrewing 4 lag bolts to steal or mess with this ugly old homemade fishhouse. Sure enough 2 days later when i went back to fish, The house was gone. I found the holes, the bolts and a couple sunflower seed shells I had been eating 2 nights earlier but no house. Oh well an old homemade house, 5 years old whos cares let them have it. Well than the final straw whoever took the house was nice enough to return the house to the same lake but a week after the houses were supposed to be off of the ice. So I get a call from the DNR and since I didn't make a police report all I could do was go get the house immediately and pay the fine.

Do what you like but my advise would be to forget about it.Even if nobody steals it I can almost guarantee someone will either cut it, trash it , or dump in it. At least if you do and it turns up missing make sure you make a police report or you may be paying a fine.

Let's just say I'm willing to accept the risk of theft or vandalism. I live on a lake where I can see the fishing spot, my neighbors would see it, etc. And the lake is almost always free of other anglers...no one fishes it, for whatever reason. I guess they don't know that it can be pretty good fishing.

My primary concern is the house blowing away in a strong wind, and alternately freezing into the ice.

Wow did you get a dose of the world today as we live in it.. Virtues, and loyalty with peopleof the same kind dont exist anymore. basically the only people you can trust is your family, and the dreaded *snag* (put in some humor). anyways thats exactly how it is going to be and i miss the day when you could trust most people, but now, who can you trust...really.

Truer words were never spoken Jiggin' Kinda sad isn't it? frown.gifWell I prefer to look at the positive. The thieves could have dropped the shack off on Lake of the woods. Then I would have been very angry having to drive up there to pick up my crappy old fishhouse on a work night. smile.gif
