Jumped the Flash

I shot a deer this weekend and had a strange thing happen. I had a 40 yard

shot with the deer facing me. I centered the bead on the chest and squeezed

the trigger. The deer disappeared in a orange flash and cloud of smoke.

After a half hour wait and two hours of tracking I found the animal.

Now the very strange part, the ball had went through both lungs as if I had

taken a side shot. The only thing I can figure that the deer jumped the

flash. With a muzzle velocity at 1568 fps it would take only .086 seconds

for the ball to go 40 yards. It is hard to believe a deer could move that

fast.

I was using a 50 cal. Lyman Deerstalker, 495 ball, 90 grains elephant FFG,

and .010 1:7 Dutch Schulz dry patch.

I know its been discussed here recently, but was there any delay in your shot from having a damp charge. This cold really reaks havok on things. Also unless your clothing is wiked quiet, the cold tends to make clothing a little louder too.

There was no distinguished delay. I seal the nipple after decaping with poly wrap and have poly wrap over the bore. I have had delays when using Pyrodex Select but not with black powder.

I was hunting in a ground blind with a good rest and had plenty of time to get ready. The only movement was the squeezing of the trigger.

The clothing I use is real tree cloth with a polar fleece orange frock so not much noise.

From what I have heard from other groups this is not uncommon with flint locks, cap locks I don't know. The deer may decided to jump the same time I squeezed the trigger. I am glad I did not try for a head shot.

My hunting buddy once shot a deer with an old compound bow.

Big deal, right?

The deer was walking down a game trail from east to west. It then jumped the string and spun around on a dime. The arrow went through the opposite side my buddy was aiming for. Double lung. Dead in 100 yards. Coolest darn thing......
