RAMROD Mounting Advice

Guest

Question

I'm ready to install my new RAMROD 2000's and need some advice on position. I have a 01 Lund Mr. Pike 17 w/ single driver counsel and gunwales. I want to start using planer boards this year probably Off Shore Tackle's. Any suggestions on where to position the rear 2? Also, front 2 with drivers counsel? Appreciate any help.

Good luck.

Hiya,
Rod holders take some thought. It's a good excuse to sit in your boat and ponder things actually.. . smile.gif

I usually put a set in front of the consoles, IF you can reach around/over them to get to the rod in the holder. I don't like them right next to the console cuz then you ahve the rod butt sticking in your ear sometimes depending on what angle the holder's at. For the back ones, I put the one on the starboard side just behind the driver's seat so I can reach behind me and check the lines by feel if I'm flatlining or pull the rod out quick when it goes off. I like having them far enough back so I can run a rod straight back or even in the prop wash next to the motor (muskie fishing) if I want, so you kind of have to get out a trolling rod and eyeball various spots to see how it works out.

RAM 2000s are great rod holders.

Cheers,
RK

Pondering planning it's all good. I will do that with a cold one in the mug holder. Thanks for the advice, any tips on muskie trolling???? I would like to try that also.

I just mounted 6 flush mount ram rods. I have a 1850 sportfish. I put two up front, accessable from the front pedestal, between the hand rail and the cleat. 1 on each side behind the driver and passenger seats, but reachable. I spent some time sitting there, and even put my bimini top up to see how it would work on a rainy day. I agree with RK, you don't want them sticking in your side. I put the rear most ones behind where the back of my rear bench is, for the same reason. I did NOT center them on the gunwale. I prefered to mount them closer to the inside of the boat, so that I can easily pull the rod out without banging the side of the boat.

Fish-on makes a nice cupholder that drops into those mounts, but with the flush mount you'd almost have to mount it right on the inside edge, but it's something to think about.

I put silicone on the underside of the plastic to help seal it against the aluminum, so that water won't get in there. Most guys suggest using bolts and backing them up with nylon insert nuts. I just used sheet metal screws and it seems to be holding well. I'd definitely use stainless steel though.

If you need a metal hole saw, you can use mine. I live in Oakdale if you're in the area. You can look at mine if you want. Becareful drilling on the starboard side, there's more wiring over there, especially back towards the rear light mount.

Thanks for the advice guys!!! Got some more info on the walleye sites.

I got the tools analyzer but thanks for the offer. Just hate cutting holes in the Lund!! But the holders will be nice.

What's your trolling plans for opener?

Good luck.
