Mississippi River waldos today

Joel Nelson (from the turkey forum) and I fished pool five today. Indeed, there was plenty of ice. The tub was covered with the stuff once we set to fishing and the warm clothes were certainly appreciated.

We had quite a few hits in just about every place we dropped the line, but only one fish made it tothe pail. It was a strapping, fat 15 1/2" walleye, just right for the table. Jigs and plastic was the charmer.

As mentioned, it was a bit chilly at 7 above zero when we arrived in the dark, but things really warmed up when we discovered water all around us. Fortunately the boat did not leak or show any signs of sinking.

So what were you wusses in those little cloth huts doing?

Weatherman lied. Again. East wind. Cold front. How the heck do I know what happened? I can attest to ice though. The boat was covered with it. The outboard was covered with it. The electric was covered with it. The rods were good for one retrieve before the guides needed de-icing. Like I said, lots of hits...just short. The one fish that made it to the boat ( tasty too I might add) hit really good and one other hit hard but came off before it got to the top. Weird day today, but I suspect the cold front as being the culprit. On the bright side, we absolutely no competition for the "hot" spots. lol

Today kind of reminded me of the wall STF. Or a car tire....you know, one day you're the dog, the next day you're the wheel. Guess what day it was....lol

All I need is twenty degrees. By the time I looked at the thermometer this morning Joel was half way here and the boat was outside and ready to hook up. Oh well, now I know what it is like while fishing at 7 degrees with a southeast wind of fifteen mph.

In one area we fished I HAD to use the outboard to back us into the wind to stay in a good drift. T'wernt good. Fish were there, but in a funk.....kind of like me.

And I have said it before.....looking down a hole in the ice is sort of like the skin diver for roto-rooter getting ready to go to work. The open water is tops in my book even if it is cold.
