Can anyone give some info. on an old zercom unit?, such as what they were intended to do and did they do it well or not? I've never seen one used but I know of one for sale and wonder if it's worth picking up for say, maybe $50. I don'tknow how old it is.it's in a green soft pack similar to a vexilar.Any input would be greatly appreciated.

i have an old clearwater classic that i still use and i love it. it uses grey scale instead of color. the separation can be as little as 2-3". it outperformed the older vexilars but not so anymore. still, it works great. it is one of the originals that were still made in merrifield. the one your talking about in the soft pack, is it a color unit? if so, i cannot really comment on those.

If it's the colorpoint, stay away. They had nothing but problems with them. My brother in law had one, nothing but problems. Unless it's free I'd stay away from it. Look around and you'll find plenty of good deals on locators that actually work (new and used).

Good luck,

My friends grayscale Zercom puts out so much interference that a Vexilar or Marcum within 100 feet won't work. Don't know if it is a problem with just his unit or all of them. Something to consider if you fish with others.

I own a Clearwater Classic and It really works pretty good for seeing fish. It's not fancy, it works. I do use it in the same house with Vexilars. I would contact Vexilar and price a factory reconditioned FL-8 unit I think you can get one for $170 ?? They are located in Bloomington. Good Luck!

I picked up that zercom classic way back in the early 90's, loved it, my opinion is that it was the best unit on ice till just a few years back. It served me well for many years and is still sound technology today. They work very good. Friends hated it though 'cause it'd wreak havoc on some of their other brands!

Thanks for the info guys, not sure what type it is, but I can take it out and try it first before I buy. I guess I'll give it a try next week and then decide. Thanks again and good luck on the ice. I'm going out first time tommorow in Park Rapids area.

i've used zercom units most of my life..like others said until a few years ago they were the best thing out there..the best zercom unit i'd say is the lcf-40..then the clearwater pro..(dosen't seem to get much interference from other units)then the clearwater clasic..if it's in a green case it's a colorpoint, which i've never used..never heard anything good about them really..oh yeah there is also the RTS unit thats a vertical flasher, never had great seperation on that unit..

all the units except for the colorpoint are all liquid crystal units no moving parts like the vexilars or the colorpoint..thus less stuff to go wrong with them and they used exstemely low power..(chargered my battery maybe once a winter) if you can get your hands on lcf-40 or a clearwater pro you'll be happy..

Had a Colorpoint, when it ran it was a really good flasher. Had it in for service twice when the display just faded out even w/ a new fully charged battery (same prob twice!). Got/gave a lot of interference w/ other units too. Sold it and made it someone else's problem.
