2-way radios-FCC license?

I am looking at getting some new 2-way radios and I see most of them state that an FCC licesnse is required to operate. Can anyone give any insight into this? Can I get by without? I have a whole slew of people I know with 2-ways and I have heard nothing from them about needing a FCC license.

Some of them have certain channels that require an FCC license to operate. They also have channels that don't require a license. Just be careful of which frequency you use. The instruction book will tell you which frequencies need a license.

The use of two way radios was deregulated back in 1976. The units with 5 watts or less should not require a license to operate. I guess I have never seen literature which mentions licensing since then.

I have also heard that the FCC no longer has an investigative branch. They will investigate complaints but there's no one out looking for unlicensed users. Of course I would always recommend legal use only.
