Inner Wear??

TSCTSC

Recommended Posts

I just go my ice armour. Hehehehe. Gonna be joining the Smurf Gang now.

Question now is : What do you guys recommend for me to wear inside for thermals and other inner wear if I am going to be out ice fishing?

What thermals and other inner wear have you all used and found good for keeping warm? Thanks!

Also, does anyone know who sells thick neoprene gloves for icefishing?

What I where under my ice armor suit really depends on the weather and how cold it is. Most often though I will go with a pair of mid-weight fleece pants with jeans or if real cold, I'll go with a mid-weight fleece pant w/ polar fleece over it.

For the top I will go with Under Armor's mid-weight t-neck top with mid-weight fleece top and then a windstopper jacket. I layer myself so if I don't need the Ice Armor parka on, I've got a windstopper jacket underneath for protection.

I usually have expedition weight fleece pants on underneath my insulated windproof/waterproof bibs. that's usually all I need on the coldest days.

As for a top, it depends on the weather, but usually I layer, so that I can strip down for a warm day. But I start with a light weight capilene top (silk equivalent) as a base layer, then wear an expedition weight pullover top, with a softshell fleece as outerwear. If it's that cold out I'll put my Carhartt Arctic coat over the top, but usually it's warm enough in my shelter to just wear the base layer and pullover top.

As for the gloves, I see Clam has a new glove out, haven't got a chance to look at them real close, but a good option is a Kenai glove. They're fingerless so it affords you some dexterity for baiting your hook or tying a line. They are made of windproof fleece and neoprene and run $20. they also make a fingerless glove with a flipover mitten top.

Regardless of what the outerwear is, the innerwear (against the skin) is always some fabric that whicks away sweat and moisture. I've had very poor luck with fleece as the layer closest to my skin. The sweat just sits on the skin, and then when you bend over or the fleeces comes tight against our skin — YEEECH, that's COLD!

For long johns as well as upper skin-layer stuff, I've got some Helly Hanson wool-polyester blends as gifts for Christmas and such that are fabulous. Silk IS a good option, but can be pricey. On a budget, simple polypropylene inner layer is best, and then I wear fleece or wool outside that.

After wearing all manners of techno-gear over the years, I still think wool is best unless it's raining, and it's the only thing I've every really worn that still keeps you warm if you get wet.
