lure storage suggestions

what does everyone use for keeping lures seperate and easily accessible when out on the ice. i'm starting to get too many lures (spoons, ice flys, airplane jigs, swimming minnows, etc, etc.) and they're getting tangled with each other and i'm not able to find specific size, colors without sifting through compartments.

i'm thinking a fly box is the easy answer for sunnie and crappie stuff.

My big question is how to organize my walleye lures. keeping them seperate, as not to be banging around each other, chipping paint and getting discolored. Then having ten different "balls" of lures to go through before trying to separate the specific lure from the "ball" that it's in. get the idea?? any help or advice appreciated in advance.

I found a couple great lure carriers. The little container that 3M elec tape comes in. It's a round plastic container with a lid. I the glued some foam to the bottom and hook the lures to the foam and put the cover back on. No tangles.

Airjer, I hope your avatar holds true!

Today's Tackle came out with a new product for this winter that could possibly help you out a bit. They're called Tackle Pouches... New Products from Today's Tackle

Might be an option for storing your tackle. I plan on using them to keep things organized and more productive.

I too would like to hear hanson's input on this subject grin.gif

Ah hah!!! I did see this Airjer! Thanks for the kind words.

I've come up with a few tackle storage solutions in the past and I think this will be the year when I finally become TOTALLY organized.

My biggest headache in the past was jigging spoons. Ahhh!!! The trebles were always tangling with the split rings. I would reach into my tackle tray for 1 spoon and end up with a cluster of 4 that took 2 minutes to untangle.

So, I stumbled across this clever solution. I took some fly boxes (these happen to be from Gander Mt. but Cabelas makes them as well). I then took some adhesive weather stripping and attached them to the inside cover. The weather stripping keeps pressure on the lures when the box is closed so they don't flop around. Simple and very effective. The boxes run about $5-6 a piece. Maybe this isn't the cheapest solution but it works awesome!!

I then took a Sharpie Pen and labeled the outside of each box for type of lure as well as size. I just picked up a couple more boxes last week since my jigging spoon collection is growing. I'll soon be filling a box with Custom Jigs & Spins Demon Jigging Spoons as well as some JRs Tackle Spoons.

All of these boxes I keep in a soft side tackle box from Cabelas.

I would like to add though, thanks to Mr. Bruce Mosher (Today's Tackle) and his creative mind, I know have a solution for the rest of my tackle 'problems.' And that is the Tackle Pouch!!

Here's a couple shots of the Tackle Pouch-

I've been told that the larger size tackle pouch will fit the large Salmo Chubby Darters in them as well as my larger Swedish Pimples, Angel Eye Sr. jigging spoons, Airplane jigs, Jigging Raps, etc. So I'll put all those lures into individual tackle pouches and then put them in your standard clear plastic tackle tray.

The above photos of the Tackle Pouch are Bruce Mosher's but I think you can see the options are endless for how they can be utilized.

The ultimate in organization and protection of my higher end tackle in my opinion!!

Late last ice season I went to the local sporting goods store to pick up some fly boxes to keep my spoons in and found a case that opens like a book and has foam on the front and back cover and a thicker chunk in the middle to hang lures from. There is a plastic divider between all to foam to keep lures from touching and the whole thing closes up and fastens with velcro. I don't remember the name of the company that made them but they were silver/black and it was reflective. I haven't used them out fishing yet, but have all my lures in them and they look like they should work well. If they don't I will be going with the same thing that Hanson has. That guy has an idea for everything.
