Mississippi Plastics Questions??

beaver44

Question

I keep hearing everyone talking about their success on the Mississippi with jigs and plastics. I have never had luck for walleyes with any artificials besides crank baits. What kind of plastics seem to work the best? What brands, products and colors seem to work? I want to try some plastics, but don't know where to start. I don't want to be out there with 8 inch bass worms or something. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have seen the White Firetail http://catch-n.com/ ring'n grubs work great.

Put that on a JR's rattle jig and hold on!

Power minnows, Ring-N Grubs, and ringworms work well.

Superdoos, madtoms, and crawfish plastics can also be dynamite on walleyes.

It really is all about profile and action.

Keep an eye on the water temp, as the water warms you want plastics with a little more action and size. Cooler temps smaller and less action.

Don't be afraid to just drag the larger profile-more active plastics or barely hop the smaller profile less active plastics right now.

Plastics are very effective fishing tools to have in your walleye arsenal.

I have been playing around with plastics for a few years now on my local waters. In my experience they work at times but will never replace live bait in my boat. Yes I still use them and at times they work great but they never seem to work quite as well as the real thing.
Lots of plastics guys will argue this I know. But around here and at this point in my experience my confidence isnt there as it is with live bait. Maybe in the future it will change.
The other thing is the Mississippi seems to always have some sort of plastics bite going. I ? if its because of the water itself or more guys trying plastics?
Around Duluth very few guys use platics compared to the Old Miss.
