Deer Gun Season Lengths

we had a discussion around the water cooler this morning and were wondering why the major differences in the season lengths. For example, 4a is only 2 days, 4b is 4 days, zone 2 is 9 days, zone 1 is 16 days. What is the reasoning behind the various season lengths. Just wondering. Thanks

I often wondered this myself but my reasoning is being that if you notice the habitat and terrain in the areas where the sason is longer, youll notice that it can make for a tougher hunt. zone 1 is mostly all northwoods for as far as the eye can see so deer have more terrain they can use and the hunter has to look harder to find them. down here where i live in zone 4 there is a ****load of deer. any season longer than 2 days would make an overkill probably. Im not sure why they split the seasons though. maybe to give the deer a break?

I grew up south of dl and hunted zone 410 all my life. I now live in by watertown sd. If the kill was easier, why not just lower the amount tags issued? It bothers me because it's hard to take a selective buck when you only have two days to hunt. You can shoot up to 5 deer, but only hunt two days. That doesn't seem very logical to me. That's sounds like the recipe for small bucks if I ever heard one.

I agree that there would be alot of hunters in 4a and 4b if the season was at the same time but wouldn't be like that anywhere. Espescially with the multi buck and all-season options now, most of my friends hunt both weekends anyway. I hunted Sherburne game refuge on opener 10 years ago which is zone 2 and there were hunters everywhere. I have hunted state land in Zone 1 and there was litterly a car every 1/4 mile. Why not just make the season consistent?

I wish they would leave the season open longer. If you need 5 deer in your ice chest. And you only have 2 days to hunt. you would need to take more than 1 deer at the same time. 1 deer saturday morning 1 saturday night. 1 sunday morning 1 sunday night. Lets do the math. Umm that 4 times they thats if you get a deer each time. So you would have to take more than 1 deer each hunt. There is so many deer around centeral minnesota. I can see were there would be big bucks in god country but down here around Annnandale if someone see brown its down (I hate that saying it makes hunting sound like crazy people with guns shooting everything).

This year I was dumb and never asked anyone to hunt there land for slug. So I went to open hunting land. I SAW 8 HUNTERS. 2 OF THEM WERE FOR WALKING AROUND ALL DAY. How are the deer going to come back when there are hunters walking around all day. My friend I went with could not just sit down and SHUT UP. I swear some people don't know how to hunt deer. I have never shot a deer yet. But I know not to walk around all day. They are not even deer driver either.

Mn Walleye 1976, My thoughts too. The DNR just wants the $. mad.gif They know it's allmost inpossible for one guy to shoot 5 deer in two days. The DNR just wants the $. mad.gif

As to the splite season in zone 4. It was a managing tool. That I think needs to be changed soon.
