Good to glow

In August I saw my fishing changing pace and needed to try something way out of place to get back into fish. Digging through last winter's tackle I came up with a couple jigs in glow purple from JRs. I also found some glow jigs from Scenic, so I tossed these units together in a bag and put that in the boat for the next trip. Sure did make a difference in the catch rate!

I posted some of the results in the crappie forum and was curious to see where ice tackle would go for the rest of the season using nothing but glow colors on that particular lake. Fishing as I normally would thru the fall season I was treated to the best sunfish season I have ever had.

I lost my glow purple early on and fished the red . Jeff Beckwith from Scenic stepped up and asked a few questions about glow purple. After he got his new pigments he made a few of the purple in the go devil lure to add to my collection and they came yesterday. These are GREAT!

Almost a pink in the package, these pups fire up into a hot purple fairly easily, requiring a minimum of warming. In a dark room they look like mini-blacklights.

All I need now is a bit of time to hit the water again, but it appears that this will not happen until after the buck season.

The glow purple was brought to my attention last winter early on and I had very good success with it on crappies and sunfish. The availablitiy was very limited though and now with Scenic Tackle also entering this color market there is no reason why everyone can't be good to glo.

I'm not certain that this was "just for me". The pigments cost a fortune and I am sure that I am not on that good of graces with Scenic. As I understand it this was a "first run" batch and he was curious if it was going in the direction of what I'd used in the past glow-wise. It was.

Scenic will do these for you Dietz....or anyone for that matter. JRs could maybe do purple, too, on an order if they don't stock a particular bait.

Glow purple has turned into a unique color option and has provided some interesting outcomes. Like Tom mentioned, it will provide something slightly different and it can trigger some fish into biting. It's a color I'd expect to see more available in the near future.

I experimented with it a bit last winter and while it wasn't the most phenomenal color in my spectrum, it still had it's time and place, and it will be incorporated into my arsenal for this winter as well. An option I think a lot of ice anglers will soon not be without...

Scenic would be happy to do them for you. We have taken a special blend of paints and a special pigment to come up with this color. I have taken what fisherman are asking for in performance and color to get this just how they want it. Preliminary tests with the compatibility between the paints, pigments and our baked on clear coat has been positive. This product has met Scenic Tackle standards so keep your eyes out for this color in the VERY near future!!

Deitz,

You are not going to let CrappieTom be ahead of you at all this season are you..lol As mentioned before this color is a unique blend of paints and pigments. Last year I spent a LOT of time listening to what was catching fish and what you guys wanted so we are going to follow that advice. You wanted a purple. We are making it!!

Glow purple 1/16 oz Go Devils wouldn't be fair on the pannies... it'd be too easy grin.gif

Glow red, pink, and blue have been my best producers, but the addition of a glow purple jigging spoon, as well as panfish jigs, would provide a few more options for triggering wary fish. Somedays it's that curveball that you throw at them that seems to be the ticket. With glow purple very well having the possibility of being that curveball...

Well Matt it may really excite you then if I told you that this spoon is a darker pink with just a tinge of red and a bit of blue to it.....before it is charged!!. Once hit with the Custom Jigs and Spins “Nuclear Flash Micro Charger” LED light and it is charged it turns a unique purple. After a period of time when the glow dies down some it will start to return to that original day-lite color.

Um... yeah... those are going to rock! Those colors are pretty much my go-to colors for much of winter. Glow red and pink, and now that new addition of glow purple. Amazing how the purple is heavily apparent without even being charged-up.

I'm going to make a prediction... the new colors/spoons shown above will provide many new fish-catching memories this winter grin.gif

This new Scenic purple is being applied to many of our products at this time. Look for them in your local sporting good stores and watch for them on this site. If you do not see them ask for them.

I've been using glow and super glow type products now for as long they have been available. I paint alot of my own glow jigs and starting this year will have several of the super glow powder colors too. I started painting my own stuff years ago because I couldn't get the color patterns that I wanted on my favorite jig styles. So I stripped the factory paint off or just bought unpainted jigs. I found that clear glow over top of just about any color pattern created a glow in color type effect, where you could see the underlying pattern and colors in the dark. The funny thing is that the jigs don't look particularly "pretty" in daylight, but sure do shine in the dark...

The bottom line is that glow colors work and as more manufacturers experiment with them, we are sure to see some neat colors and effects like this purple glow. But this may be a relatively slow process because the higher quality glow materials are very expensive. Plus the liquid versions are hard to work with because the glow material tends to settle out quickly. I like the powder paints myself, but they require many steps $$$ when creating multicolor patterns (but they're worth it). Also, powder paints don't degrade when in contact with soft plastics and that's very important to me.

Glow is color is here to stay!

Great insight John! I'm with you, jigs that "degrade when in contact with soft plastics" are very frustrating to encounter. Granted some may take time for this to occur, but nonetheless, a quality jig with a quality paint job goes a long way in my book.

I know that Jeff Beckwith from Scenic Tackle has put in a lot of hours to develop a glow purple that will show it's color (or close to) during daylight as well. And from what I've seen so far, he's got quite the product coming out that brings glow to new extremes! I'm really anxious to try out the new glow options for the Go Devil, I really think we're going to see some positive results...

Thorne Bros, located right off of University in Fridley carries Scenic Tackle... www.ThorneBros.com

I was in there last weekend and they had a pretty good assortment of Angel Eyes and Go Devils.

The new glow purple color isn't out yet, but it will be soon. We'll keep you posted...

Yes it is very frustrating when plastics do not compat with jigs. This is most often caused by what is used to clear coat the product. Some powder paints will also break down when they are in contact with some plastics. Scenic’s clear coat is “worm proof”

LittleJohn,

You are not kidding when you talk about the new glow paint products being expensive. We currently maintain several colors of pigment as we custom mix all our own paints now. This is one of those products that you get what you pay for. There is cheap stuff and there is good stuff out there but unfortunately I am yet to find any good cheap stuff nor will I change from what I am using at this time.

Big Paulie,

We have distributors that sell to a ton of stores in the Twin Cities. As Matt mentioned Thorne Bros. carries a selection of our products for sure. Unfortunately when we sell it to a distributor who sells it to the stores, I have no idea who carries it from there.

NEW PURPLE is being worked on as we speak and will be offered on this site and will be available to the stores.
