wdgold
Good luck getting any info out of anybody on this forum. I had a post the same as yours a few days ago and I could not get anyone to give any info. Either nobody hunts up there or there afraid that you will find there hot hunting spot. What these people don't realize is that I've been going up there for years and will be going anyway. I was just trying to get some general info not anyones exact GPS location. Some of these people think they own the forest and that they are the only ones that should hunt up there.
Harty1384
i have hunted in the chippawa national forest about a 45 min. south and have had ok luck. alot of the birds are getting up way out in front almost out of shooting range unless you got your full choke in. been up there three weekends and have seen about two dozen birds
woodview
Snuck out there a couple days in the last 2-3 weeks (my bro was bear hunting in the area ). I got into a number of woodcock (though not as many as I did up by brainerd) and a few grouse. I'd imagine they'll still be in town for a week or so before heading for parts unkown. Odd compared to the earlier post because most of the grouse I came across were staying down. A couple would've just let me walk right past if not for the pointer hooking them. The one thing I'll say is that unless you're going out during the week or hit a trail right away in the morning make sure to get off the road/trail. Plenty of pressure on the days I was around. Only flushed one while on a trail but a number of them back in. Seemed like almost all the ones I got up were close to the lone (or small group of) pine trees or woods I'd normally consider a little older than 'prime' grouse woods. Almost stepped on a porcupine It was on the ground in some thick ferns with nothing but small trees so I sure wasn't expecting it. Wouldn't have even noticed it but when I got about eight feet from the thing it spun around and put it's rear to me. Wouldn't move after that just stared off into space looking over it's shoulder (in my general direction). It's the only time I've been out this year without the dog (THANK GOD). Had a vision of my dog's nose stretching out to investigate and get a noseful of this odd little critter... SLAP wdgold, no offense by not responding to your post, just didn't catch it. Big Roy
I have not hunted that area in about 3 years, I found to many ATV's. Any info on how to get away from them?
ducksnbucks
I've shot 5 grouse so far and have flushed about 20 birds. Most of the flushes have been in to thick of cover to shoot, but at least there are some birds around.
