Help with SS Prop

lundluvr

Question

Toying with the idea of replacing my aluminum prop for SS. Other than the extra cost and being more susceptable to damage what benefits should I expect. Hole shot, top end speed etc? I have a 1800 Pro-V with a 150 opti, three batteries,40 gallons of gas and usually 3 people to push.

Any help for pitch would also help. Thanks

You should be able to get better holeshot and higher speed... the better holeshot because the prop blades won't deflect like they do on a aluminum prop, and higher speed because the prop will likely be cupped more than a aluminum prop.

As far as what pitch you need to provide more information... what pitch prop are you running now? What RPM are you turning at wide open throttle?

You are probably going to lose a little RPM on the top end mainly cuz the stainless doesn't flex and lose pitch like Aluminum. But on the other hand if you are in mid to upper portion of the RPM range for the motor you should gain a few MPH on the top end cuz of the no flex.

Try Jay Soderbloom. He will let ya know what he thinks would be ideal for you.

Make sure you know things like size and pitch of old prop, alum or ss, how holeshot is, top end speed, where your ideal trim level is at top end, rpms at top end, boat type and motor size etc.

I get all my props done by him and his prices cant be beat.

He also does custom prop work. I had a prop done by him and man did it make a world of difference.

Jay is a straight shooter and wont fill ya full of bull.

Give him a call. While your at it pick up a Fishbright for your Coleman Lantern. www.soderbloom.com

I have an 1800 with a 150 Yamaha VMAX. I run a 21 pitch SS prop. Fully loaded I get 45-47 WOT at 5400 RPM's. 52 top speed at 5600. With my 21 alum. prop I top out loaded at 45 and 48 near empty. I don't notice much difference with my hole shot. Unless you just want to spend some $$$$ you don't really have much to gain. You also up your chances of damage to your lower unit because an SS prop doesn't have any give. I hit a gravel pile at 5 MPH and bent the shaft. An alum. would have rolled over. $50 for prop repair instead of $500 deductible. I'm ordering a new boat in Jan. without the SS.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
