Selling a Rifle ? Rules

Sportland_Bait

Recommended Posts

I just won a rifle at a DU banquet and I plan on selling it. I've never sold one to anyone before. What are the rules for selling a rifle? Since the rifle is registered under my name, are there any requirements for transferring possession to someone else? I just want to follow the rules. Thanks.

the gun is not "registered" so to speak. you filled out the yellow sheet and it is mearly a backround check. it does have your name and the gun serial number on it but in MN we have NO gun "registraion" other than special full auto weapons. You can sell it to who ever you want to. That is the letter of the law. Common sense dictates probably selling it to someone who at least looks like he won't or hasn't killed anyone.

I have bought some guns like this. The only thing I do is make sure I have the serial number written on the check you get and maybe make a copy before cashing it. This will give you who and where the gun goes. You can always write out that you sold X gun on X date to X person too and keep it. I do not know of any special rules for transferring ownership of the rifles and shotguns.

What kind of gun?

Yes, your rifle is "registered" to you at a Federal level. Catman is correct that it is NOT registered in Minnesota.

I have bought and sold several weapons (shotguns, rifles and a couple of pistols) and never worried about who I sold to. That being said, I would be a little careful to make sure you have the persons name and address. Some will be willing to give that info to you others will not. And maybe they don't want to give you the info for valid reasons. They might own several weapons and don't want anyone to know so they don't get burglerized. Others may just be on the shady side.

What type of rifle did you win ?? Caliber, manufacturer etc: I might be interested.

yes there is a federal record of you and the gun's serial number. but it is not "federal registraion" (like Canada for instance) and you are not required by MN or federal law to process or file any paperwork when exchanging guns with a private party. we do not yet have "federal gun registraion" requiring you to declare what you have and where you have it. it is just part of the purchasing procedure and we should not get used to calling it "registraion" or we may get it. i have sold/bought LOTS of guns and hate to think one day I might be on the hook for what someone else does with them.

the conversation here highlights just what is wrong with all the gun laws on the books today. Informed, intelligent (you guys anyway) and law abiding sportsmen, confused at to just what we have to do to comply. And WE are sportsmen! My brother-in-law is a metro cop and during the so called "weapons ban" that just expired, he had no idea if I took this AR upper and snapped it on that AR lower, that I would commit a felony! He didn't even know what a bayonet lug was. Anyway, Sportland_bait, if you are confused, so is everyone else. Good luck bowhunting! Leave a big one for me in November....

I have edited some of the posts in this thread as it has turned into a sales ad. This is a very good topic and I hope that it stays on course. Unfortunately, I will have to delete this thread if it continues to violate forum policy. If anyone would like to place an approved ad, please click "contact us" below. Thanks all!
