Fall is here - What time frames do you perfer?

Recommended Posts

I'm a huge fan of getting up ealry and trying to be one of the first on the water, I don't fish in the evenings much (guess that has to do with responsibilities at home). With the cooler weather here to stay what is your perferred time frame to be on the water? Do you still get out first thing in the morning? I have found that my success has been better in the fall in the later morning and mid afternoon then first thing in the morning or last light in the evening, like the summer time. Mine would be 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

If I had it my way I'd be on the water all the time.

I would subscribe to that same timeframe RU. My belief is that when the water starts to really cool , activity levels of the fish would increase during the day as the temp comes up. During the lucky instance that november brings alot of fishable non-hardwater days , i go out in the morning but find that most of my action occurs during the normal slow time like 10 to 2 when the sun is peaking. I think thats why a sudden warmup for a few days late in the year can be good after a long stretch of chilliness. Seems to really hold true for shallow rocks that can soak the suns heat up real quick. I prefer to be out every minute of every day though allthough reality says that can't happen!!

I get up at 3AM fish until 11 or 12 then back out at 2-3 until 1 hr after sunset. A little on the hardcore side but in the fall I tend to see the best action right before sunrise and from 8-10 am. I believe that it is different for everyone. It is how and where you are approaching the fish that creates "your" good time.

Hiya,

I think in terms of contacting the most numbers of fish, the 10am-3pm window has probably been the best for me, especially the later it gets. However, some of my biggest fish have come at dawn or dusk, or after dark. I've unhooked some pretty big fish by feel after hooking them right at dark. A few years back the last fish in my boat for the season was a 51 that hit an hour after sunset. As long as it isn't too bitter cold, it can be worth toughing it out after sunset...

Cheers,

RK

Wow Jon, do you work or even have time to sleep? That's one crazy schedule.

I've been trying to get out this year to do some muskie fishing , but haven't made it out yet. I caught my first ski last year and have been pumped to try it again, but something always seems to come up. Plus my cuz has the boat and his schedule most of the time differs from mine, I get Sundays and Mondays free. Hopefully I'll make it out at least once this year.

I normaly only sleep about four hours a night, and all I do is work and fish. No other hobbies or interest of any kind so it leaves alot of time open.

I used to have other hobbies Jon, but this one has now cannibalized every single one of them and the budgets associated with them. I need to do more of that night fishing. Hopefully mille stays semi decent for the four days i am up there next week. I called the taxidermist and told him to clean out his freezer so there is room for the new state record when i get back. Think thats overly optimistic..? chaaa! I am going to catch it on a red phantom!!

RK,

Or anyone else, for that matter, that's had success after dark in the late fall....just curious if you're finding the fish in the same locations when it gets dark that time of year? I fish until I can't get the boat in the water anymore. So that time of year, it's pretty much all trolling. I've stayed out past dark a number of times but have never had anything happen late in the fall. I'm mostly trying the same things I've had success with during the day. But maybe these late fall fish move somewhere else after dark?

As far as time frames, I would agree that mid day can be very good. But I can not say that one time has really proven to be substantially better than any other time. But it seems like I can pretty much always count on some kind of action that last hour prior to sunset.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
