Latest craze in the world of Musky???

Recommended Posts

I have been following some threads on another site and some of the guys are talking about "Big" lures. 18" - 24" + lures that have kind of become the latest craze in the muskie world. Various makers ranging from Wishmasters to Hughes River (Shakers)to Basin Baits and Customs. Their thoughts and discussions are interesting and they make some good points. Thing is most of these guys a fishing HUGE water, like Georgian Bay for example. I don't see these lures as anything I'll be stocking my box with as a majority of these baits are running anywhere from $100 to over $300 a bait. That kind of money is just nutz in my eyes then again when you don't have it $30 bones is nutz.

Has anyone tried these monster lures around here? If so have they produced any monster fish???

Biggest Bait I have is a 12" Reef Hawg and that beast doesn't see much water time, maybe it need to start seeing more.

Man what are these guys useing for rods and reels telephone poles and a.t.v. wenches to reel these things in or what?!!! Just thinking about casting that big of a lure makes my arms ache. Jeez what are they gonna think of next....... crazy.gifconfused.gif

I have a few trolling baits in the 16"-20" range. The only time I pull them out is night trolling on big open water like Mille Lacs, Leech, LOTW. I use heavy catfishing rods and a big line counter reel to control those big fellers. I have put some nice muskies in the boat with those lures, but the conditions have to fit; open water, suspended baitfish/fish and a theory that a bruiser is in the area feeding on larger forage like walleye or whitefish.

My Dad makes all of his own baits. Here is a trout he trolls at night like Jon mentioned. Blows my mind! Even worse he catches fish. I wish I was one tenth the fisherman he is. It would be a blast and maybe I could quit my day job. LOL

pic is of one in the build procces.

Considering the "lure's" scale in comparison with the radial arm saw in the near background, I'm thinking it's really a marlin lure. Or, well, if it mimics a 2-lb fish, it's prime bait for a really nice musky, just the thing a 'lunge might go for when she's trying to gorge before winter.

Hmm, reckon my E-cat No. 3 would be enough backbone to pull that bucket through the water. One strike and I'd be headed for shore, though. blush.gif
