planning quetico trip 2006

Recommended Posts

hey all!

I love this HSOforum.

I've been coming to BWCA for the last five years and am looking to cross the border next time. We (4 of us guys)usually do 10-12 days on the water, heavy fishin'(Walleye & smallies) and set up pretty well for gear.

What we don't have, we rent from Lynn and John at Voyageur North.

In the past, we've come up around July 4, however, I'd like to try it a bit earlier, say mid-late May.

Any advice as far as route and timing is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to FM Bob! Glad you like the site. It'll grow on ya!

Not sure what you mean by route planning, so I won't touch on that.

It's pretty simple to follow the walleyes around in this neck of the woods. Spring (May) you just have to go find them. Typically you are going to find them in the bays of the body of water that you are on. Warmer water. Chances are they'll be up shallow and will take a spinner rig with a leech or crawler. Hope this helps.

If you have never been up in May, be very prepared for bad weather. There is a better than even chance you could see 2-4 striaght days of rain and 45 degrees during that time of year, and be miserable in camp even as you are slaying walleyes (this actually is possible-trust me). My clothing and gear changes significantly from a June trip to a May trip. As for the fish, find current, drop jig, catch fish.

Been to Quetico the past 8 years. We go thru Andersons

Canoe Outfitters in Crane Lake, MN as we have been

doing the Western routes so to speak. Been up in June, July

August and September but never May so cannot speak for

that month. However, one member of our group has been

and the previous post would be very accurate in that be

prepared for cold, wet weather which is very typical that

time of year, but don't let that stop you as we have all

kinds of very good gear available these days. If you are interested in further information let me know your email.
