What's Beltran really worth?

Just noticed Beltran's stats. I don't know the whole story of his season, but it sure looks like the hype was overdone.

He may end up to be more overpaid than ARod or Sammy but then again a huge majority of them would starve if they were paid for performance. Makes me sick - millionaire pitchers who lose more than they win, hitters that can't get out of the paper bag.

Oh well, market value is determined by the old "what a willing buyer is paying" and that wil never change. I remember when Pete Rose got a mill for a year - he was one of the few I thought was really worth it.

windy,

on frank thomas, i would say $8million sounds about right for a guy that played a whopping 34 games, batted .219, hit 12 homers and 26 rbi.

Multiply that by 5 and that should about average the big hurts stats for the last 5 seasons or so.

I would say your getting one heck of a deal, for the 3rd highest paid player on team.

Rundrave,

I guess a real man would have played through the torn muscle in his arm and the broken bone in his foot. I guess if he were a Twinkie he would have just taped it up and put a little "red hot" on it and gotten his sorry butt back on the field. Broken bones don't need surgery, torn muscles don't need surgery. By the way, Geno. How's the return on the millions you guys paid Noma'. Don't you think if he was a real man he would have just told the doc to cut his groin muscle and kept playing? I guess that's what real men do.

Just wondering?

I guess a REAL OWNER would have seen the writing on the wall after the first dozen or so injuries before signing a new contract again and again.

Sorry windy theres no way to spin this to look good any way you try, if you want to tell me you guys got your $$$ worth out of thomas since he signed his latest contract, I want what your smoking.

Windy,

No doubt that injuries to the "stars" really hurt-except maybe for CNY Tim's Cards.

You are jumping the gun with me again. I NEVER said Nomar was worth anything close to his K $ either - we are talking the same talk except your eyes seem to be closed when you stir. So I think you should either stop trying to rile me, or think a little (more-I was gonna write harder but I don't want to cause you any headaches) before you start to stir. He, he....

Geno,

No need to be soft with me...I like it hard! Bring it on, Sen~orita! It just seemed kind of funny you talking about Frank being hurt and the money the Sox wasted when the Cubs are by far the biggest overspenders on fragile talent. I mean come on, compared to Slammy, Noma and Wood, Frank's salary looks like chicken feed. Trying to compare the Sox payroll and results vs the Cubbies leaves you with Cubbie Blue Kool-Aid all down the front of your Ernie Banks jersey.

Two out of three against the Twinks and the Injuns are the next victim.

YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOARD...YES!

Windy, there you go again. Please start at the top and re-read and you will see that I have never denied the Cubbie payroll or lack of production as a team. You brought up Sammy and I brought up Frank. So what do you want me to say? Maddux is worth $9Mill for losing more than winning, or Prior is worth his money when he can only go 5 because by then he has thrown 120 pitches or Wood is not the most overhyped guy before Beltran? C'mon....stop twisting things because you are getting nervous and stay with the humor - you are gonna need it come playoff time while you are sitting at Jim's new restaurant holding your playoff tix while watching the AL Central champion Indians. Those tix are gonna be worth something someday to a collector beacuse of the coming collapse they are for so you've got a real treasure to put away for a rainy day.

PS Kind of thought that since you know so much about the p**p chute that you liked it hard-humor, you know!

Rundrave,

A real owner respects what a player has done for the team year after year, especially one who is close to hitting 500 homers for the same team. The Twinks don't know anything about this because once their players develop and start getting good the penny pinching owner lets them go to a team who is willing to pay for a quality player. I guess loyalty is not in the dictionary up in MN. Also, the streak where Frank had all his homers this year prior to reinjuring his foot provided a much needed boost at a critical time and the Sox are still reaping the benefits today. Imagine, and I know you would love to, the shape the Sox would be in today if they had lost 4 or 5 of those games that Thomas helped to win. They would be even with a team that is truly on fire right now while they are sputtering. If the Sox hold on and win this thing, and I have every reason to believe they will, they will owe a great deal of the credit to Thomas and his payroll will be worth every penny. Thomas has also said he will be in the dugout for the playoffs and his imput would be very helpful to a lot of the younger players as they prepar to face some of the top pitchers in baseball. Sometimes you reap and sometimes you sew. I think the Sox are a stand up organization who rewarded one of their veteran warriors and I have every reason to believe and hope that he heals up and hits his 500th homer wearing the black and silver.

Geno,

There you go, back to the hard stuff! I was just funnin with you when you talked about me reminding you about overspending. I thought it would be humourous since it was so obvious, to bring up Slammy, since the Cubbies are still paying his over bloated salary (they are still paying him, right?) Anywho, I was just making a little funny to get your goat, you know about those Wrigley Field goats, right?)

As for being worried, let me state for the record.

" I AM NOT WORRRRRIIIIIIIEEEEEED " NOR AM I NNNNERRRVVVOUSSS!

Should be interesting, the rollercoaster is at the peak right now, in the next 7 games I will be coasting into the ticket booth to buy another ticket for another ride starting October 3rd or the wheels will have come off my car and my coaster will be laying in pieces scattered across the amusement park.

I will let you know whether to send me flowers or champagne!

PS: Since you seem to be so sure that the Sox are going to blow it, I have given your ticket to the skybox to another friend of mine who belives in the Sox. I know that you won't mind since you don't think they are going to make it anyway. (It's a really, really nice skybox, Geno. Free food and all the booze you can drink, right between third base and home plate. But you won't miss it, since they aren't going to make it anyway, right?

You are right about how sick it makes me to pay Sammy to stink up the Oriole season.

And I understand about giving away my ticket to a loyal fan, but always remember, Windy, that anything FREE is worth what you pay for it. Guess I'll have to meet you at Jim's for the out of town game - IF the wheels don't come off. And if they can play against Cleveland like they did against the Twins they can hold their lead. At least you have something to not be worried or nervous about - you must also be a realist, in addition to a humorist.

NAPA: think we said ARod is overPAID, not overRATED.

Agreed on that one, Geno. I don't think there was anything A-Rod could have done to make his contract seem worth the bucks. By far, the biggest overspend in history, even compared to the last two years of Slammy's.

The hunt for October begins tonight...GROUND ZERO!

The last 2 years were kind of water under the bridge. The money on Sammy was more for 'advertising' reasons than anything I think. I still think he would have been a good number 6 or 7 hitter to have instead of paying and not getting anything for him.

This week could have more playoff-like intensity than the actual playoffs will have --- depending on who wins. If Cleveland wins, then that is a very true statement for the ChiSox fans. Kind of like the intensity we had on the NSide when we slowed down Carpenter's Cy Young mantle-dusting a little yesterday. Cubs take 10 of 16 from the div champs this year, but can't beat up on little old Cincy.

Looks like we gotta play spoiler to Houston, and that puts FLA in the playoffs - crud, I hate FLA since Bartman. More than I dislike Harrelson as an announcer I think.

Sure do wish I could pull in a Cleveland radio station for a few days. Maybe Jim can do that at his new place?
