Pulling prop shaft

Question

I noticed that my prop shaft has a slight bend in it and after doing some research found that it is bad too run that way.

Well I need a special tool to remove the bearing carrier assembly in order to remove the shaft.

Anyone know where I can find one of these tools? It is for a Merc '89 25hp. The tool number is 91-93843--1. Or any tips on getting this thing off. I tried using the thrust hub assembly and a vise grip and ended up breaking off one of the "lips" on the carrier frown.gif And Yes I do realize that it's left hand thread grin.gif

I recommend buying or taking out a manual from your library. It'll give you detailed instructions. First you'll need to measure the forward and reverse backlash. The manual will show you where you have to disconnect the shift linkage. It'll be under the carb or behind the rubber plug above the cavitation plate. Yes you should remove the drive shaft from the power head along with the water pump. You should have a type C lower unit but theres and old C and new C so without seeing what you have I can't really help. In either case I don't think you need a "special tool", you'll put the thrust hub on backwards and then the prop and use that to remove the carrier bearing. I can't stress how much easier and how much more confident you'll be with a manual.

I got a manual and also access to an online service manual. According to the service manual, I need a special tool that locks onto the carrier assembly (castle nut looking thing). I did try reversing the thrust hub, however the thrust hub isn't sided it's round, so I tried using a vise grip and rubber mallet. That didn't work. It didn't budge. I followed the manual which says to remove three screws from inside the shaft housing and then unscrew the carrier (left hand thread). I don't know, I'm about to give up. I broke off one of the lips of carrier. Anyone know how much (labor)it would cost to take this thing off?

I also add here what I added there.

I wasn't able to get it off and ended up bringing it to a local marine guy. I haven't heard back yet, but I was able to get a used replacement "kit" on hsolist (gears,roller carrier, shaft, bearings, thrust hub, and prop nut) for a Benjamin.

dtro: I just stumbled upon your post. Amazing, I have the exact engine and year with a newly bent prop shaft (thanks Gfreind mad.gif). I got a couple estimates ranging from 350 to 225 dollars since I don't think I want to mess with this one. Let me know how it came out (if it came out!? confused.gif). Thanks.

well the guy I brought it to was pretty resourceful. He ended up making a tool to remove it, which meant more labor time, but that is my fault for trying to do too much myself smirk.gif

Looks like I will have just under $300 for parts and labor. That includes a new impeller I had him replace as long as he had the LU off. Had I bought new parts, probably closer to $500.

I think the shaft alone is $250. You can get one at Twin City Outboard for about $150.

You'll probaby need new seals also.

I recommend this guy to anyone, especially those in the south metro.

Thanks for the info dtro. Am going up to the big Chip next week and decided to bring the boat instead of leaving it with the mechanic for the week shocked.gif. What did you hear regarding the possible damage relative to the LU when running, hard, w/bent shaft? The prop visibly wobbles when turned by hand, but the prop doesn't bind on the LU when turned.

The problem is that the wobble is hard on the bearings and could potentially cause more problems that I would care to mention. If you can see it wobble, it's probably bad frown.gif. I think he told me that runout .010" and over shoud be fixed.

I picked mine up today grin.gif
