topo map help

beretta

Question

i am going to be getting a map or two from mytopo.com and was wondering if there are any reasons to go with the 1:24,000 scale over the 1:15,000? i can get the whole area i want on the 1:15,000, but i heard that the 1:24,000 is more gps friendly. is this true and if so how? also is there any other tips you can give me about topo maps? oh yea this is for the black hills in wyoming if that helps. thanks a lot

The 1:24000 scale maps are used by Foresters out there in the Hills. Those maps are the industry standard. I personally like that scale because that is what I am used to using. The 1:15000 scale or 4 inches to the mile maps are probably easier to read. I'm not sure about which map is more GPS friendly. I have 16 years experience working that area as a forester. If you have any questions about the Black Hills, I may be able to help.

All my USGS maps are in the 1:24000 scale.
I now have software by Map Tech Terrain Navigator and have no need to buy another map. You can upload and download multiple routes to and from your GPS with the software. I number my way points then print a section of the map and bring that in the field with me.
