I need advice on an air compressor

Black Bear

Question

I'd like to get my first air compressor. I'd primarily use it for airing up tires, blowing the work bench off, running a hand nailer for funnishing the basement and possibly running some air tools. Any recommendations? Any favorite brands? or what brand not to get? Thanks

Sears upright 6 horse 30 gallon 150psi max. There on closeout right know. uprights are nice because they take up alot less space. 30 gallon tank keeps plenty of air on tap. I use it for everything from impact guns, air drill, air ratchet, air hammer, angle grinder, brad nailer, finish nailer, paint guns, airing up tires, blowing off benches, and inflating toys to name a few.

I use a compressor extensively and there are 2 things to consider. first is do you want to be able to transport it easily. If you do then you are looking more at oiless compact compressors designed for nailing and light use. Many diffent styles available. Get at least a 2 gal tank. Drawbacks is they do wear out relatively quickly and are noisy. If you are looking for a garage compressor and will be using it extensively. A bigger tank greatly increases the amount of work you can do and then a belt drive compressor with oilbath compressor is far more durable and quieter than a oiless direct drive. recommend at least a 30 gal tank and 60 is better. Vertical ones take less space. Makes a huge difference when running sanders, impact wrenches and cut-off tools. Hope this helps

I've had the same one for a couple of years. I have to agree, I've run it a lot and it has worked great

I had a oiless compressor-NEVER again! mad.gif It was noisy as all get out, and now it is broke. It will cost me more to repair then to replace it. So I am also on the compressor hunt. I can tell you this much, I will gladly spend the extra cash to get a belt drive. Quieter, and will last longer. Just remember to add oil as directed! Maintence is easy, compared to cost of a new compressor!
