Night Walleyes

Recommended Posts

Tuzzy and I are heading out after work in his Grumman to fish for hopefully some nice walleyes. I'll report my findings tomorrow... Good luck if you get out this weekend. Fall is coming and the evenings are cooling off nicely, footbal training camps are open and soon I will be checking the shore walleye bite.

Well we fished from 6 to 10:00 p.m. and only caught one eye about 14". Met a guy coming in on a bigger boat and he caught 3 leadcore lining in 36' and the walleyes were suspended at 18', he lost about a 25" that came off just short of the net. The night before he limited out and caught 7 total south of the island. We worked the weed edges and deep weeds and caught a couple of smallmouth a pike and a largemouth. It was still a nice night to be on the water.

Took a little trip around Oneida last night and found lot's of floating grass and weeds and no eyes. Was nice to get out however on a nice night and check my spots. Crappie fisher lady at the pier didn't have much action as there were a few baitfish in there but not many. With gas being what it is now a days don't know how many scout trips I will do, more like a wait and see here.

Rob and I jumped in the 17' Tracker Deep V last night 8p.m. and fished Canadarago till about 1:30 a.m. this morning. We had a blast catching eyes, Rob and I both released a 24" eye a piece and caught 7 for the table in the 16" to 18" range.

Rob had a couple of big big steins on and couldn't get em in. We lost more fish than we caught. Rattle Traps ripped 9' to 15' casted parallel off weed edges. 4' to 6' snapped/pause x-raps and twitched pause T-sticks silver an black.

Rob was on a tear with his bait cast rod/rattle trap combo he must of caught dang near 13 fish and lost 5 the last couple hours.

Beautiful night... Hardly anything wind other than an occasional south east breeze.

Thanks for taking me Rob that was fun...

Thats great guys, didn't know that lake was that good for the eyes, do they come to shore in the fall like they do on oneida? Going to start happening soon, i checked my spot last night and found out that it's now posted up tighter then a drum. A few low lifes left all there trash there last year and now I get to pay the price. The best part is that they only fish when it's warm and my dad and I have to whole place to ourselfs when it gets cooler. We will still fish there and see what happens.

Lee - I never tried from the shore on Canadarago but I would venture that it would be similar to Oneida. I checked my spots on Oneida and there still weed choked and no baitfish to be seen so it's still early yet. It wont be long.

Lee - By 1:45 p.m. yesterday afternoon the rain stopped and Tuzzy and I went to Canadarago. We stopped for a fish fry and gravy covered turkey sandwich in Richfield Springs., nice scenery there. Got to the launch by 5 p.m. and headed south., things were slow while the mostly cloudy skies and occasional glimpse of sun sneaked out briefly.

Just a small northern a 2.5' largemouth and a 6" largemouth that Tuzzy snagged on a 1/2 oz. rattle trap which sadly was the only fish he caught all night. I finished landing 4 of 6 walleyes but missed about 4 as well... 21" 20.5" 18" 17.5" for Tuzzy's table, he greatly appreciated the fish. Changed tactics and went extremely shallow off a sand bar placing the boat in about 2.5' to 3' of water and working casting lanes along sandy weed pockets. Black and silver T-sticks, but I also picked up my first walleye working 13' casting out and reeling parallel to the the edge of the weeds in 6' with a clown smithwick super roque. We pulled off the lake by 11 p.m. as a brief shower visited us and things had slowed.

BTW did you check out the Oct/Nov 05 Issue of In-Fisherman Magazine? Check out page 13 in the Feedback section there maybe someone you know that did an article on fall walleyes and Shad on Oneida Lake... :^)

Struck out on Oneida last night fished the north and east sides of the lake and the only species I caught was one smallmouth. Water was extremely muddy on the east end of the lake. Fished from 8 - 10:30 p.m.

I know what you mean Jeff. I'm a baseball junky right now and with my Cardinals still in this thing fishing is taking second fiddle. I'm looking forward to seeing some new ice jigs this year as well. Can't wait to see what you guys will be unveiling for this season.

Fished last night... Was dissapointed by my St. Louis Cardinals performance in game 6 and caught a limit of walleyes after the game on the east of end of Oneida Lake. Not bad for an hour's worth of fishing...I caught 4 total and released one short eye. 19", 19" and a 17" for the fryer tonight.

Greg and I had a blast on Oneida last night and never needed the waders we caught 40 wallyeyes in about an hour and half. Greg was killing em on the HJ-10 Husky Jerk (silver/black)and I was plugging right behind him with challengers, thundersticks and even this little bargain bin walmart immitation minnow crank worked too (all silver/prism slash/ black. It was to easy last night. 7ft med.light rods and 6 lb. fireline. Largest was 24". Got home early...

Fished Saturday night and picked up 4 all keepers from 8-9:30 p.m. silver/black Walmart Renegade minnow. Not a bad plug at all for $1.97 ea. Tuzzy caught two and Frank got his limit as well. We had to work for em but they hit better after we left around 11 p.m. a couple of buddies of mine caught over a dozen combined.

Tim,

Ya can’t win them all every night. Good to hear at least someone is still getting out in the boat. I am really getting fired up about the up coming ice fishing. We have a few new products that I think you are going to like. As you may have heard that new purple color we just came out with should be pretty hot. We also have some new 3-Dotters that I think we are going to name “Pay Back Jigs” Fish with these and they will pay you back. They will be out in about a week. Oh and the list goes on. Still early in the season!!!

No boat now the walleyes are pretty much chaseing buckeyes and shad in shallow locations here and can be caught from shore as well as wading. I have read good things about your new purple paint, can't wait to give that a go!

Purple is a very interesting color I believe Dark Cloud likes that color for reservoir crappies... Thanks for keeping us eastern boys in the loop Jeff. Glow jigs have there place in everyone's arsenal and so don't natural colors like black, red, brown and greens plus combinations of glow and non-glow can be appealing as well. Varieties of colors in vertical and horizontal jigs and combinations of silver and golds can be killer as well. Glitter and hair also added have there place. Looking forward to seeing your new creations!

I found some here in MN as well! They have three colors. I took home a purple and a yellow. I wish they made them larger for fall fishing. They should be great in the spring around here. Thanks for the tip!
