Rebels75
I've been striking out with the walleye and would like to get back to my roots and go catfishing. I was wondering if anyone could give me some shorefishing locations around Litchfield, MN. I know Renville county is good but where? Cold Springs has been good in the past, is it still? Thanks for the info!
Derrik
For channels I'd go up to swan lake and fish by the culvert. Or like you mentioned the channel in cold spring is always good.Litchfield huh? Where abouts? I'm a little familiar with the area.
Mr Special
I prefer cut fresh sucker or bullheads as bait. Rig up a slip sinker set up "weight depends on current" 1-3oz should cover most places, to a barrel swivel, a foot leader of the same line as main line, to the hook. I like to used #2 or 1/0 Eagle claw widegap. Location wise the Dam at Cold Springs is a multi species spot, or the park area at Cold Springs can be good. Fishing dawn or dusk will produce better. Good luck

Rebels75
I like the beer part. Say you are the second person to mention using bullheads for bait. It's legal??? I'm not judging I just hadn't heard of using bullheads before. Do you cut the spikes off or use younger fish or what???
hanson
Rebel-Perfectly legal as long as your bullheads are under 7" long. Most folks using bullheads are using them live for flathead catfish. There is no need to cut the spikes off.
Mr Special
I cut them up into 1" chunks. Or if you have a smaller bullheads like in the 4"-6" then I use them live and whole.Good luck
Rebels75
Well thank you very much for the info. Now one more question, can you buy the bullheads or do you have to catch them yourself? Later

Mr Special
We just catch them. On the Chain it shouldn't be hard to catch some bullies anywhere. If I don't already have bait, I'll just buy some crawlers and spend the 1st 30mins catching bait. You can used cut suckers too. Some baitshops will even give you the dead ones for free or really cheap. Good luck
BamBam1970
Hmm, just wondering who this is. I am from Grove City, and spend alot of time in Litchfield.
catman71
don't forget frogs, Mr Special. If you can find them easily, bring them with. Anything I use I tip with Berkely Blood flavor powerbait. Anyone else ever use frogs?

When I said I was a little familiar with the area it's because I live here.
Mr Special
Yep you're right. But lately I've been having trouble finding frogs. Later in the fall is really when the frogs work great. That's when the frogs start to migrate back to the water and the kitties just go ballistic.
