Lake Alice
I'm looking at a 2002 Nissan 2-stroke 40. I know nothing about the reputation of Nissan outboards. Anyone own one, hear anything? You'd think they'd be high quailty.
0 bobO
I have never seen a nissan outboard on a fishing boat, I have seen them on sail boats and such. I know they have been around for a long time but not sure on there quality. Might not be any help, just my two cents
0 Doonbuggy
Lake Alice - I am the second owner of an '89 Nissan 70hp outboard and I have been very pleased. Other than adjusting the carbs a couple of times it has been a strong runner. The only thing I don't care for is that I believe the engine is a little louder than comparable motors. As this was my first boat/motor I didn't really think of it at the time, but this is a minor complaint. Also, I see that you are in White Bear Lake. There is a Nissan dealer close by in Forest Lake that can service the engine if needed and they might be able to tell you more about them.I'd recommend a Nissan motor.DB
0 PierBridge
Quote:I'm looking at a 2002 Nissan 2-stroke 40. Don't know about the older Nissans but the new one's are awesome.Nissan TLDI models are direct fuel injection 2-strokes similar to the Evinrude E-TECS.Of course they cost a boat load of cash. 0 Granny
I have a 40hp Tohatsu on the boat I am selling and it runs great. Never had a problem. I have been told that they are a pretty popular motor in Alaska because of their durability. Mine is a 1996 and as far as I know there has never been a problem with it.Granny
0 Ufatz
The Bargain Cave at Cabela's stores always has a half-dozen or so Nissan outboards in it, presumably since they have been returned for some reason.I believe the Tohotsu outboards are air cooled rather than water cooled, thus they are quite a bit noisier. Spent considerable time in AK and don't recall any great demand for them in salwater or fresh. Possible I guess.
0 TSCTSC
I agree. We fished quite a bit in Alaska and do not remember any Nissan outboards off hand. We saw a lot of Honda tho'. Seemed like that was the most popular brand there for saltwater.
0 Fish On
i got a 91 nissan 8 hp on my duck boat and it is pretty quiet for a 2 stroke and starts on the 1st or 2nd pull on the coldest of days over all i have been very happy with it
0 BIG DS
Tell ya what, I've worked on outboards for many years and can honestly say that the only thing I have done to a nissan is general maintainence. ie: clean and adjust carbs, lower unit grease, normal stuff. 0 Lake Alice
Thanks DB and others for the input. This is a fuel injected motor, electric start, on a 2002 bare bones Alumacraft V16, karavan trailer, barely used. The guy wants 4200 for the whole deal, I think it was over 6 new. I think I gotta go for it.LA
