Guest
Looks like with the number of tags for the deer season that it will be another stellar year. The last years south of Leonard by the Sheyenne National Grasslands the deer hunting has been nothing short of GREAT.Its getting pretty easy for a non-resident to draw tags with the amount they give out, just the cost thats a little high, but dont mind paying for the hunting we get.I hunt on a private 1200 acre place with alot of deer and turkey. iffwalleyes
Yep the tags are easy to get I have never been turn down yet on my buck tag and that is the only thing I apply for every year. If you just want to hunt for meat and don't care about it being a buck wait till the second drawing and put it it is like only $55 buck or something like that. Non residents have just as good of a chance in the drawing as residents since it is a lottery system. Lee you have some awesome hunting where you are at I work with a guy that shot a 2 5X5 (1 with gun and one archery) last year really close to where you mentioned hunting. Said he as so many 4X4 and bigger that it was crazy.
Guest
iffwalleyes: You are correct. My archery tag i can buy over the counter for 200.00 and the gun lottery in the first lottery isnt real good for the non-resident as so few tags are for the non-resident.Once we get to the third lottery,I apply for 3-4 doe tags and the last few years draw all of them. That usually gives me from 1-2 buck tags plus the doe tages and finding the deer to shoot is never a problem. All is great until we get a few hard winters and then iam sure the atgs will drop back to normal.Last year we had 6 bucks with bow kills and we went 17 for 17 with the rifle tags for buck and doe. Guest
Took a trip to the ranch in N.D. this weekend to set up some deer stands and all I can say is that in a 2 mile drive sat ,I counted 48 deer. This fall will be nothing short of great.
Royce Aardahl
I bowhunt the area from lisbon to kathryn. We always go out the first weekend to go after velvet. Lottsa fun. As wet as it is this year the bugs might be a hassle but worth it. last year one of my buds got his first P&Y in velvet. dandy 9 pointer. CRP sure did wonders for the deer out there. Guest
Eyeguy54: while I was up there this past week the bugs were wild.A guy will need all the bug tamer gear to survive opening weekend or you will be supper. The only reason I was seeing all the deer in the late morning and mid-day I think was due to the woods being so full of bugs, they couldnt even stand it.Saw a few deer just standing in the Sheyenne river to get away from them.Good Luck this fall,as it looks to be GREAT. Anylakeanytime
If I am I am correct, if you skip the initial lottery for a non-resident liscense, you are able to pick up a non-resident DOE tag for 55 dollars? Granted you do not a chance at a buck tag, but if you just want the experience and the meat it is a good way to go. I personally would apply for the $200 tag with the 1st choice buck, 2nd choice buck and if you do not get and still want to ND hunt, get the $55 doe tag in the third lottery? Just a few thoughts. Guest
Exactly what I did. I will buy my bow tag for buck or doe,and then I apply for 4 extra doe tags, which as of late I recieve.
Anylakeanytime
In case you were not aware the third lottery has started ... first come first serve.Ben
Guest
anylakeanytime: You are right the third lottery licenses applications are now ready, but the first come, first serve licenses will not be available until after the third lottery, lottery must be held first and then the rest go first come, first serve. Also,a non-resident can buy a bow tag,go throught the first lottery and draw a buck tag and still get the extra doe tags, all North Dakota cares is that they sell the tags and get the money. Guest
anytimeanylake: The ranch a friend of mine owns has so many deer that if I went up there for 3-4 days and hunted hard,im sure I could shoot 4-6 deer without any problem.Last year four of us went up for the weekend and shot 3 bucks,8-10-10pt,and then filled 4 doe tags. The deer hunting was great and this year will be no different. All the deer were shot with bows.
