Motor kills

Question

First fishing trip of the year, same problem. I run a 70 Johnson on my tracker. Had the motor overhauled 2 years ago. It starts great but dies on me when I put it into gear unless I rev it up for 10-15 seconds or so. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do or adjust before I bring it in to the shop? Thanks.

Does this happen on a cold start or all day long. Cause some motors including my own are cold starters but once they've run they perform great all day. Not worth having anyone rip open to cause additional problems. If it's going on all day long then you've got an issue.

Thanks for the reply, it happens all day long, we will drift or use the trolling motor for anywhere between 20 min. to an hour and then will try and start the motor--same problem. Is there any low speed adjustment, either getting too much gas and flooding out or not enough gas?????

Had similar issue on 40hp Mariner last year. I ended up cleaning out the spark plug connection and now use Seaform regularly with the gas. Seems to have fixed my problem, not sure if would help with yours.

Common for this engine. These triples don't idle down worth a ****!

On the side of your carbs is an idle adjustment screw. These are what need adjusting so you don't kill at low end speeds.

They must be adjusted in exact synchronization with the engine fully warmed.

Go run around the lake for a few minutes. You can shut the engine off, and turn each screw COUNTERCLOCKWISE 1/8th of a turn.

Start the motor, and let it run until the computer lets the idle drop.

If it doesn't kill and idles to your taste, you should be good to go. If it idles too low or high, go either 1/16th turns in or out on each until you reach your desired idle.

The other problems with these engines is they like to "load up" after reasonable amounts of idle time.

I never found a corection for this that didn't compromise my idle-ability without stalling.

Does anyone know of a free web site that shows a diagram of this 1990 70 hp Johnson that I could look at as I make the needed adjustments? Not sure of which ones to turn, thanks.
