Universal Sonar

KING

Question

Need some help...

I have a 65AP with universal sonar wired to a Garmin 240. And it don't work worth a dump. IT is good for depth reading only, you cannot see any detail at all. Is this typical with universal sonar? Do I have the 240 set-up whacked? Or is there some strange dislike between the two. If I crank up the gain I can see blobs...but no nice clean arches.

The other thing is I am running a LMS 350A off the back...could that whack out the 240. If so what else would/could work better. I could use a reason to get a new FL-18 or something...but not sure if I would like the flasher up front or not.

I am having the same problem with my Universal transducer attached to a Lowrance finder. At times it seems like interference, but I am curious if anyone else has a similar issue or fix. Could this be interference because the trolling motor and the graph is attached to the same power source?

I have the same trolling motor setup...I also do not get clear resolution with my Garmin 240, but it works well enough at times to see fish if you get used to reading it. To be sure of what I was reading, I just plugged in my vexilar...no problems then. Why exactly it doesn't give good, clear pictures, I am not really sure...

Is this trolling motor interference, or something else? Or - if you turn the trolling motor off does the issue go away, or stay the same?

If it goes away when you turn the trolling motor off then it's interference... make sure the power for your locator is isolated from the trolling motor battery - both power and ground

I can have the trolling motor on or off...dont much matter. They are on seperate power sources. I emailed Garmin wonder what they'll say...maybe should try Minn Kota too.

Sounds like an excuse to get a new Vex. He he.

Have you checked that the transducer is level when you have the trolling motor down. I noticed with my new Lowrance this weekend that if the transducer was pushed up on click, it would give me incomplete arches and it had trouble reading depths at any speeds over 2mph.

I noticed the same thing with my Minnkota, either feeding a Lowrance X-125 or a Vex Fl-8. The sensitivity of the universal sonar isn't very useful to me. Anyhow, I plan on placing a Vexilar transducer on the Minnkota.
