EDEN PRAIRIE - The Vikings signed undrafted rookie placekicker Jonathan Nichols of Mississippi early Sunday evening, a move that should help address the team's most obvious remaining weakness.

Nichols, a four-year starter for the Rebels, converted 20 of 27 field-goal attempts (74.1%) and all 19 extra-point opportunities as a senior in 2004. His best season came as a junior, when he converted 25 of 29 field-goal attempts -- including a career long of 54 yards -- and won the Lou Groza Award as the nation's top kicker over future third-round draft pick Nate Kaeding.

The 5-foot-11, 182-pound kicker set 15 school records at Ole Miss, including becoming the school's all-time leading scorer with 344 career points.

The Vikings also were interested in Ohio State's Mike Nugent (second round to the New York Jets) and Michigan State's Dave Rayner (sixth round to Indianapolis), but neither kicker was available in the round the team had hoped to take him.

Nugent and Rayner were considered better pro prospects than Nichols, who for the time being is expected to compete for the starting job with Aaron Elling and Jose Cortez. Vikings coach Mike Tice said he still may be interested in adding a veteran -- a possibility that could arise if the Jets or Colts release an incumbent starter. The Jets currently employ ex-Viking Doug Brien, while the Colts have former Pro Bowler Mike Vanderjagt.

The Vikings agreed to terms with 12 other free agents Sunday night, including three former Golden Gophers: defensive backs Ukee Dozier and Justin Fraley, and tackle Rian Melander. Two more local products, North Dakota quarterback John Bowencamp and Bemidji State kick returner Mike Nordyke, also agreed to rookie free-agent contracts.

Other signings were: linebackers Sarth Benoit (Southern Connecticut State), Ira Cooper (Nebraska) and Heath Farwell (San Diego State); cornerback Dovonte Edwards (North Carolina State); receiver Christopher Jones (Jackson State); tight end Matt Ross; and center Kyle Schmitt (Maryland).
