0 unclejake
In MN, 16' or better needs a throwable. if you have an enclosed gas tank (part of boat)...you need a fire extinguisher. if it is just a portable gas can out in the open you don't need one. you also need a whistle or blow horn if you have 16' boat. you can print off all the 2005 boating rules off the DNR web page: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/regulations/boatwater/index.html under "boating guide" Hope this helps. 0 Slyster
Oh.... how about my 14' boat which I threw a wood deck over the front benches therefore covering the plastic tank.. do I need a fire extinguisher now?
0 unclejake
Not sure...probably could make an arguement for both sides of that specific circumstance. If I were you, I might be tempted to buy a cheap extinguisher to have on board...to cover your bases with the johnny laws out there.
0 Valv
Hmmm let's see, $ 10.00 extingusher or $ 85.00 fine....hmmmm gotta think on this one.... Don't forget your throwable, last year cost me $ 80 testing a used boat....without it.....
0 Fisher Dave
(Contact US Regarding This Word).. yes you need a fire extinguisher. Your gas tank is in a enclosed compartment... also be sure there is adequate(sp?) ventilation under there with your gas tank.. If air cant circulate what you have just created is a bomb. Static electricity can ignite gas fumes alone.Fire extinguisers.. I think everyone should have one on board if their boat is propelled by any kind of motor, including electric..I spent well over a year of my life in a wheelchair, and roughly 9 months confined in a BURN UNIT with 2nd and 3rd degree burns, some areas to the bone.. a fire extinguisher would have been priceless for the pain, and for actual finances, my 20% of the bill was over 1/4 million dollars.. can anyone say bankrupcy?.. I am lucky, I am alive.A burning gas can is a BIG PROBLEM.
0 Slyster
Sorry to hear that Dave. There is lots of ventation so no worries there but I certainly will now be getting an extiguisher.
0 gunflint
Fisher Dave, I wasn't going to by a fire extinguisher, because my tank is a portable. Your logic and experience has changed my mind. I'll be installing one today. Thank You.
