1996 25 hp Yamaha 2 stroke

dtp

Question

Just bought a used 1996 16' Crestliner w/ 25 hp 2 stroke Yamaha electric start for my 15 year old son. Gas can says 100:1 fuel/oil. Anyone running same motor with this mix? Yamaha oil only? Anything else to worry about? Only 100 hours on motor - do I worry about water impeller yet?

DTP - I think many of the manufacturers during that approximate time were touting 100:1 ratios. From memory, all of them have backed away from them and returned to the 50:1 standard.

If I didn't have a gallon of petroleum based TCW-3 oil, I think I'd buy the synthetic Amsoil and run it at 80 or so to 1 until my confidence level went up to the recommended 100:1.

dtp: I owned a 1989, 25 HP 2 cycle Yamaha E/start, if I recall corectly that motor was oil injected with a reservoir for oil. Better check that out. This was a very fine running engine, hope you like it.

We just traded a bunch of smaller yamaha 2 strokes in. All 100:1 We were very happy with them but they were 12 years old and starting to get undependable. Flooding was a problem for people that weren't familiar with motors.
