Jeremy Smith's Sturgeon

Well Dan, I was there to witness the epic battle of man vs prehistoric beast. Jeremy's shouts of "Oh my God" could be heard for miles, as they traded the upper hand. I took a short nap in the boat I was in, and was awakened 20 minutes later by another echoing yell exclaiming "There she is, holy s#*t, look at the size of it" After a boatside struggle resembling the "Thilla in Manilla", the mighty beast was laying on the floor of the Tuffy. Pictures snapping from every angle, Jeremy grinning from ear to ear as he massaged his tired biceps. He had all he could do to hoist the monster up in a bearhug for more pics, before releasing it back to live another 70 years. With one last slap of it's tail, it sank back to the depths of 4 Mile Bay, and Jeremy told everyone in earshot "That's the biggest fish I ever caught." From my vantage point a hundred or so feet away, I think I saw a single tear run down the corner of his eye.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. How'ld I do? The fish was 58", and I'm guessing somewhere in the neighborhood of 45 lbs. Good job Jeremy, congrats.

Thanks Jon. You did a very good job. Could almost see it playing out just as you described it. The only way it could have been any better would be if I was there to witness it in person. Thanks for the excellent report!

Give the man a pat on the back for me and a great big attaboy!!

Used to do quit a bit of sturgeon fishing, biggest I ever aught was a 56 incher. Did most of my fishing in WI while going to collge. Below the dam in Eau Claire and where the Chippewa and Flambou come together. Twas a lot of fun and we caught a lot of 50+ sturgeon. I miss it a lot, it's been 10 years or so, and reading this post gives me the urge to get out and do it again. smile.gif

Just do it. They are going crazy in 4mile and spots on the Rainy. Sit out in 4mile bay, it's hard not to catch them this time of year!!!

Nice one in that photo, Jeremy looks happy.

Jeremy is known for catching big fish, muskies especially. Jeremy is a co-host on the "Fishing the Wildside" TV fishing show and he also appears in the different seasonal Fishing the Wildside magazines. Jeremy also helps promote the sport of fishing by traveling across the Midwest to different sport shows giving seminars. I've seen some incredible photos with Jeremy and some of his fish and it's nice to see he just added a monster sturgeon to his arsenal! A fun guy to talk with and he brings a lot of excitement to the sport. Jeremy is a class-act and certainly does an excellent job as another young ambassador for the sport of fishing!

Congrats on the catch!

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

Wonder when he caught it. I believe I just happen to have caught a picture of a kid with a 58" Sturgeon that I just got downloaded and will run out and get it posted here shortly.

I was helping the DNR tagging Sturgeon and got to handle over 100 sturgeon in two days out at 4-mile bay. If anyone is interested in some once-in-a-lifetime activity, contact Mike Larson at the Baudette DNR station as they are still looking for volunteers for the next three weekends.

I'll be back with some pics.
