Arctic Cat EFI and battery

I just bought a 1998 Arctic Cat Pantera. It has EFI, and a guy told me that the battery was "critical". If not a good battery could ruin the EFI, or other. Is this true, and how do I know if a "good" battery? How can I be certain I don't damage anything?

I'm not exactly sure what you have but Cats of those years have batteryless EFI. Do you have Electric Start?
