My wife and I have been looking at buying some lake property on big stone lake. The lake has everything i need as far as fishing and hunting. My question is how is the lake for other activities my family likes to swim and tube in the lake. What is the major bottom content? Does it get real green and soupy in the summer since it is a shallower lake? Any input would be appreciated. And also where on the lake is mallard point? Adam

ATM,

Big Stone Lake is a beautiful lake for doing pretty much anything, especially fishing. Our secretary at work has a cabin on the S.D. side just N. of Big Stone City. I have been fishing this lake on openers now for about 16 years. The shoreline is pretty much all rocky shoreline, except for where the state parks are and some of the cabins are. I think there might be some areas of shorline that have sand, but I am not sure. As far as the bottom goes, there are a lot of rocks, sand, silt, and mud as far as I know. Like most shallow lakes, it does get kinda green and mucky in the latter part of summer. It seems like there is a specific time each year when that happens. I don't fish it much in the summer months. Mallard point is on the East side of the lake, I would say about 11-14 miles North of Ortonville on hwy 7. It could be a little farther, I'm not positive on the miles. I have fished out of mallard point a few times over the years. I think you would love it having a place on Big Stone. Goodluck.

There definaty not the crouds that are on other lakes. As was stated earier the lake does get green and mucky late in the summer and the fishing seems to die. It is one of my favorite lakes until the middle of June though. You cant' go wrong with a place on any lake, but Bigstone would be high on my list.

bigstone gets like pea soup as far as i am concerned. the fishing is not to bad in the spring but after that it gets real tough. there is still fish to be caught but you have to work for them. the north end where mallard is better fishing in the spring than any other time of year. the minnesota shore line is mostly rock the south dakota shore line is better check out the freverts additon on the south dakota side.i think that shady oak realty has it. or results realty in bigstone has some good shore line with and with out cabins ask for jimmy when you call there tell him billy sent you

Thanks for the info guys. I am meeting with big stone realty on the 16th to look at some property. I decided as much time as I spend in the region hunting it would be nice to have a place to go. My wifes family is from wilmot sd so when its time to go visit the in-laws i will have an escape as well. adam

Good Luck ATM-

Everyone talks about "can't go wrong" with lakeshore or "how expensive" it is getting. Bottom Line, buy because you want to enjoy it...not because of investment returns. Big Stone is great for boating because of its size and the fishing is solid (obviously the Pro Walleye Tour isn't going their annually because its full of carp and bullheads). Ortonville also offers an excellent 18-hole golf course that sits above the lake.

All-in-All, its all about getting away from the stress of the big city careers for a bunch of 3-day weekends and 1-2 week VACA's. Hope you look for something that is or can be year-round as the ice fishing is solid and the fall hunting is great back there.
