25 hp yamaha vs honda

leechlake

Question

I'm in the process of buying a 25hp 4 stroke motor. I'm kind of a yamaha guy but the yama is a 2 cylinder and the honda a 3 cylinder. Supposedly, the honda is "smoother." The yamaha is about $500 less though. Anyone have any info on the difference between the two. thanks.

I dont have personal experience with the Honda... but it seems to me all the modern engines that I have used are extremely smooth compared to even slightly older models.

Personaly, I would save the $500 and go with the yamaha. Yamaha has proven to be a very dependable motor. With one extra cylinder that probably means a few extra parts that can fail... coil, plug, valve.. or a higher bill when getting it tuned sometime in the future.

How many tanks of gas and scoops of minnows can a person get with $500? hmmm

just my .02 cents

Well after talking with a resort we stay at every year on lake of the woods and the Yamaha's they were using. I would never buy one, but those were 40hp models.

Lots of guys with the honda's were complaining about cold weather starting and running and were switching to suzuki's. Not sure if this is still a problem.

Just remember if you are planning on taking it off the boat for any reason and it is a 4-stroke do not lay it down. You need to keep the motor upright at all times or you will have a bad day.

I had a 25 horse Yamaha councel steer and loved it. It was one of the best starting and fastest 25 I have seen. I was faster than all my other friends with other 25 horses and I had more weight in my boat. I wish I could have kept that boat but had to sell to get my new boat. Yes I went with another Yamaha.

I HAD a 2000 25hp Yamaha before it got ripped off. I had it on a 14ft Crestliner Angler. It was my BWCA boat. Excellent motor. We'd go into Sag fully loaded with gear and the boat did surprisingly well. When the motor got stole, I traded in the boat for a new Alumacraft Lunker and put a new 25 Yamaha on that with power tilt and trim.(my new Sag boat)At that time I also considered going with Honda. I asked the mechanice which was the smoother running engine, and his opinion was the Yammy was. I went with Yamaha because I have had excellent luck with them and it was quite a bit cheaper. To answer your question, the Yamaha 25hp fourstroke is a reliable good motor. I'm sure the Honda is also awesome. Good luck in your choice, Junky...............

You can't go wrong with either. Both are smooth, quiet and dependable as well as fuel efficient. Theres no doubt that either will give you years of dependable service, as long as you take care of them.

We where at a resort a couple years ago and they had just replaced all the outboards with yamaha's. They figured they would have them paid for in three years just from the fuel savings alone.

After owning both a Honda and a Yamaha 4 stroke,

if they were the same price and warranty, I'd take the Honda.

My Honda was smoother and quieter.

Buy the one you get the best deal on, they are both great motors.
